My build progress

Today I made a LMNC 1183 Quad VCA, @Dud looks like I’m copying you again :slight_smile:

Now just to work out why Im getting noise from one of three PSU’s and install my last couple of days’ modules. With the exception of the noise module, whose panel and PCB are on the budget shipping from JLC, this should finish my first row. Pictures to follow

Bought by first Kosmo boards on 25th July on the museum opening day, when I got to try larger modular for the first time and was blown away by how much I prefered the space on the UI to jam with the knobs. I was so excited I even announced to everyone I was changing over to Kosmo. Luckly I was not too far into my DIY eurorack venture, as you can see from the bottom row, and I intend to replace these in due course.

p.s don’t mind the spring reverb, it needs moving, not so much the electrical noise, but every time I plug a jack it sounds like somebody slamming a garage door. This is even with the case mounted to the wall.

That is a very good point, I have had some fun jams, and have been really inspired. I have a theory that it’s all the little inaccuracies in the analog that seem to give the sound a life of its own, often it feels the modular is guiding me, not the other way round, similar to the feeling of jamming with band mates. But yes I agree, more making music :slight_smile:

I have just found a eurorack kit for a VCF an “A1 Synthesis A1004 OTA VCF” so looks like I can make that this morning. This is not the same as making my own panels, so I have decided to push myself out of my comfort zone. I have had ideas of adding non-linear to the resonance of an AS3320, so today I want to get something working on a bread board, then diy style panel and stripboard the module over the next couple of days.

I can definatly see advantages in your ways of working with ply and stripboard, you seem to wake up in the morning, say “Im going to make a xxx today”, you make it, then have breakfast :slight_smile:

Well I know you put in a lot more effort than that, but your turnaround is very impressive.

Happy ! i finished all the panels for this case (a little boring to work the wood, drill, paint …) more pleasure to soldering :slight_smile: ), it’s a Steiner/Parker VCF, my second one because it’s really my favorite filter.

@Dud, this is the last panel for the new case you built the other day? How many cases do you have?

Anyway, I built that filter kit, now to go play with it.

yes but i’ve made all my circuits before and build the case at the end (no wood for it), so it’s all not tested modules for the moment, except the Twin drum because is moving to case 2 (with drum section).

Was on vacation last week and have had a very hectic time this week so I haven’t checked in here. You have all been busy! 90 new posts to scroll through!

I haven’t built anything new yet, but I did get my first my-designed PCB and panel back from JLC which was very exciting. Except that I messed up the alignment on my panel. Dammit! I think it will be salvageable at least though. I popped in a switch and the jacks without soldering them - the hole for the switch is only slightly off, so I think I can force it into place, then I have room to pop in a non-pcb mount small pot and wire it to the board. So game plan is to build it, drop in (don’t solder) a PCB mount pot, measure the distances between everything so that I can fix the panel, then wire up a different pot and hopefully squeeze it into the panel so I can use it for now. It’ll be a bit before I order new panels - no sense ordering and shipping one off panels, I’ll wait until I have some other stuff to order as well.

Also need to spend a bit of time looking at the project and seeing where I went wrong so that I don’t make the same mistakes next time. Also need to remember to get JLC to put the batch number on the back side of the panel next time round. The pot is so far off I feel like it wasn’t a mistake lining things up so much as a slip of the finger and not double checking or something like that…or making a revision on the board and not updating the panel or something. Theres no way I can see that I would have put the hole there thinking its where it should go… but I dont know.

Hoping that Sunday I’ll have time to build it and see if it works. Such a low part count build, I should be able to bang it out very quickly, but I picked up a last minute sub in gig for Saturday, so my free time this week is going to be learning new songs.

Nice work getting your first pcb’s fabricated, it can be a daunting process but it does get easier. I think most people here have redone pcb’s, I have made similar mishaps and much worse.

Nice work — yeah, even if you write yourself a checklist, there’s a lot that can get missed easily.

Over here there’s mention of how I handle making panels and PCBs consistent — layout in Inkscape, hole positions exported as PNG and imported to KiCad as a footprint, and then line things up with that. (And I try to keep everything on a grid.)

This is smart, I ended up using the KiCad caliper tool and just measuring everything down to the sub-millimeter. Using a footprint as a template makes a lot of sense.

I’ll give that a read after work today and I might message you if I need a hand, if that’s cool. My workflow was similar - I think my problem came from not knowing exactly where to put the cutout holes in relation to the component footprint.

Away from my computer but I think I lined up the cutouts to be over top of the “do not fill” circles for the Thonkiconns, then dead centre for the switch, but I think maybe they should have been centre of the Thonkiconns too and that’s where that problem came from? Need to double check that later
Again, I think the pot was just a weird brainfart unrelated to to the above confusion

Among my custom footprints are pots that are the same as the standard ones but centered on the shaft instead of the first pad. Because the standard ones are a pain to line up.

QUADTUSSY Panel turned out really pretty :slight_smile:
Went with PCBWay for this version, stuck with white.
