How’s everybody holding up?

I remember when this happened. It reminded me of the DC sniper killings around 2002 or so as they just shot and killed random people in their everyday lives. People were terrified to go and do anything. That would be quite disturbing indeed.

I didn’t realize that was the area of the UK that you were from. I had to take a look again at the UK and realized that my memory of the locations of a few cities was way off base. I have always thought that Manchester was further North than it actually is. I thought Leeds was further south below Manchester, and I thought Liverpool was further inland and more North than it is. I’ve been to all 3 cities, but I wasn’t driving, it was before having a cell phone in another country was affordable so I wasn’t looking at any maps as I was with a local, and it was nearly 25 years ago.

According to the statistics that I recently read, this Denver shooting spree was the 635th mass shooting in the US this year.

I read this…

Then this…

Please tell me that’s a data error…

That would equate to 127 in the UK based on population ratio… May be 27 in 40 years??

I guess it depends on what is classed as mass?

Was in Leeds In the summer, and Manchester a couple of years back… and Liverpool for an interview in 2016… My geography is terrible. It’s not helped by the fact that the UK’s land mass is overinflated on so many maps making you think it’s much bigger thatn it is.

I’m from Philadelphia. We had a 550 murders for a city of 1.5 million, which means that 1/3000 people were murdered this year.

So different outlets define a mass shooting differently. However, most agree that it involves the injury or death of 4 or more people, not including the shooter. Another site I just read said Denver was the 470th mass shooting this year.

Unfortunately, Colorado has 3 of the top 10 worst mass shootings this year. I have no idea why, except to say that skinheads were common to see when I was growing up. I knew a few in school and a lot of them have very extreme views. I mean, there was an entire movie produced based on the skinheads in Colorado in the 70’s. We also have a large population of military in the Springs with the bases being there. The cities are very liberal but venture outside of the city and it’s all Trump country.

I did some further reading and the guy was a neo Nazi. That tracks.

Yikes “UK” had 627 in 2021 for the entire 67M Population… And each one probably gets on the news.

My town may get 1 every couple of years. .5 in 70,000

Merry New Christmas too you all. In relation to mass shootings. The last one we had here (Australia) was in 1996. After it happened the government cracked down (so they should) and brought in heavy gun control. My two cents worth.

Yeah happy new year, had a couple of freinds round last night, watched a movie ( Mortal Engines seen it before and it was just as poor second time round… ) Watched Jules Holands Hootnany with some good music.

And today, fixed a couple of minor things on the Van …

And going to try and finish up my Synth Case…

Sun is shining and 14C in northern england on 1st day of year.

Apparently last night was the hottest Hogmanay on record in the UK.

Happy new year and here’s to 2022 being better than the previous two.

It cuts me deep that Engines was not great - I loved the books and was waiting on it for years.

Ahh well.

So I got of a performance review chat with one of my guys ( I hate performance review stuff ) … One of our final chats was about our “new” monthly team face to face meeting at the local Costa Coffee a nice little 2hr meeting to break away from the monotony of teams and webex… everyone agrees it’s a great meeting and we still get the agenda covered. anyway the discussion with the colleague was around location and “mixing it up” , fair enough lets go to the local pub and have a long drawn out Pint for the meeting… So I put that as an agenda item for tomorrows Webex Meeting.

Gets of the call and straight into the next Webex project call…

Teams { yes we have both , don’t ask } team message pops up from colleague…

"Just opened post, got a £100 parking charge from the Carpark at Costas for going over 2hrs :frowning: "

Pause as other guys obviously not checked post yet…

then 1 by one the other 4 respond

“Me too…”

And when I get home … yup :frowning:

Apparently you can say you were still in costas, but they want some proof you were in there… I paid Cash for my Americano and Pecan Slice…

So if none of us are successful in apealing we are looking at £600 down the tube. Not happy, can’t claim that on expenses :frowning: … The only thing realy in my power is to give them an extra day off , but we hardly find the time to take Holidays and Toil in the first place.

So what was to be a positive thing has gone quite sour…

So we are defo going to the pub next time.

That really sucks. I thought our parking tickets were bad but at £100 is pretty bad. Do you think any of the employees would remember all of you in there and be willing to sign something saying that you were there? Worth a shot…a long one, but I would try if it were me. (I’m assuming that this is a general carpark and not specific to the coffee shop.)

Yeah £100 is disproportionate to the value of the parking. It’s a small trading estate that’s 50% vacant units at present and the rest are doing little business so the car park is 95% empty , and the 5% is people in Costa.

Going to the pub from now on, we are going to look to move the meeting back to 3:15 and just run till end of day at 5:15 when we finish work…

If we are realy needed it’s just 10 mins walk to the office ( Past costa of doom )

  1. nearly just paid mine as it was £60 for early payment, but I was just so busy yesterday did not get to it/
  2. Couple of the guys have had their appeals granted.
  3. borrowed the transaction output from Colleagues Banking statement and submitted my appeal.
  4. have had a response from Costa, they are trying to find the transaction to get a copy recipt.

On another note. We had a full department meeting today with a few presentations. one was from the Mental Healt and welbeing champions. We were asked to put in “CHAT” anything we used to help unwind, relax etc…

I put in that I “chat on forums” ,… Got asked to explain, “I spend time chatting and helping and being helped by people from all over the globe”

I’ve been driving up to the old abandoned library parking lot to drink beer instead of going to the bar.
