I got here and liked what I saw, but was scratching my head about the orientation of the 1N4148 diodes.
After reading the rest of the comments, I see that I’m not alone.
As an aside, the reason I signed up was the helpfulness, and friendly attitude of posters here.
None of them have an axe to grind, as far as I can see, about the strictness of rules. Love the rest of your layouts by the way.
Nonlinear Circuits Sloth Chaos packed tightly in a 10x16 board. If you want to build a slower version that uses considerably bigger and bulkier capacitors, you can mount those on the panel directly and use flying leads to the board. This thing is tiny so it can easily fit behind a 25mm panel and still have space for the larger capacitors.
I think I might just have a go at this! Has anyone else built this VCF off this layout? Is there anything else that I need to know of?
just good vcf , thats all )
Hi Doolang,
I’m looking through all the parts in the diagram and am not fully sure how I would implement the Signal Diode D3? I’ve read somewhere that 1N4148s are technically Signal Diodes so would I be able to use one of these in its place?
If not would it be something like this? https://www.taydaelectronics.com/1n4148-switching-signal-diode.html
Thanks!
The one in the link IS a 1N4148, and yes, it should work…
Hahaha yes I see that now, my bad, I’ve just never noticed the “switching” in the name before so thought it might have been a different item.
Which end would go to the negative and which to the positive on the diagram?
The colors on the stripboard match the ones of the 1N4148.
The black stripe (negative) toward the bottom.
Sorry just to double check on the green component (+D3-) the black stripe on the diode matches up with the negative end on the diagram?
Oops, I was looking at D3…
NOT +D3-
This is a strange name for a component, it “coliides” with D3, and has a strange footprint !
I… don’t… know… sorry…
After a bit of googling, I found this :
So it looks like it’s a blue led, and it will be obvious which way to put it in with the flat side.
Oh lord, looks like you really went down a rabbit hole… Thank you so much!
Let me rephrase the question! Has anyone independently built or verified it against the schematic?
Hey! Sorry. I’m not here very often these days. Which module/layout are we talking here?
+D3- is not a signal diode, it’s an LED. The “signal diode” label is erroneous.
yep, and i like it )

I think my questions have been answered already, but just in case you’ve got any insight
Also see Tiny dazzler Hihat – knopsl modular where it is pointed out the circuit doesn’t use -12 V so C2, C4, and the connection to -12 V can be omitted.
Hello!
This is my first “post” on the forum, I’ve been quietly working away on my own synth and actually getting on quite well…
I remember seeing the video on YouTube about the bouncy ball module and wanted to make it myself! I have now built this but it just doesn’t want to work for me (the lights work but I get the same flicker everytime the input is triggered, turning the knobs doesn’t do anything). I also do not understand the labels on the diagram, do I put audio or a trigger signal in and the buttons and AV knob?
Thanks all!
