The sample and hold works very well. As I stated I build 2 that can share a trigger or can be independently triggered (using the switching capability of the 3.5 mm jack chassis). For the capacitors I found 2 types that worked well and should be easily available. I do not know which material it is made of I’m afraid. This is the type (not the value).
You can see the actual capacitors I used in the halved ic-sockets in the 2nd picture (center of the picture below the ICs).
Initially I had not included the gating bit (the 4093 logic) to the circuit, I thought I could do this by using an external trigger, but the LF needs a very short pulse (a few micro seconds), so I added this eventually which is why it is on a separate strip board.
So far I’ve used it with rather frequent triggers, and not noticed any drop in the output voltage between those which could affect the circuit that follows the S&H. I tried it with an oscillator frequency for a while given that the human ear is very sensitive to pitch changes and could not detect any whining / sinking of the pitch, so to speak.
Your and probably my mileage may vary with long periods between the pulses. So the IC socket approach may turn out to come in handy when the need arises to change the capacitors / experiment with other type capacitors.

I’ve found that these knurled nuts are not very sturdy. You can easily fasten them too much and they will start skipping the thread on the chassis.
This type does not have this problem (and you could additionally glue them to the inside of the panel you want to mount them in):

while those look lovely, they’re not pcb mount lol.
well… i mean, you could make a footprint but just mean common and such lol.
But yeah, for the normal diy stripboard stuff, those look like they would work great!

You can get quality hex nuts from SynthCube for a song. I am also not a fan of the knurled nuts.

Non PCB mount can be a virtue. It means you can make the PCB smaller and cheaper, and not dependent on the builder having access to the same jacks you used. Of course you balance that against the increased complexity of building with wiring the panel components.

I did an awkward on-board guitar fx in the 90’s. The panel wiring was a nest so I constructed the panel wiring to come to two old phone plugs and wired in two plastic phone sockets glued to the main board elsewhere in the guitar body. Phone and RJ45 cables and sockets can be brilliant if you’re using thin boards as headers etc can need a fair amount of force to remove.
I’ll be trying this method to link in power and fx in a project I’ve drawn up.

yeah that is crazy that stuff can get from the east coast to California quicker than Michigan . but it doesn’t surprise me I have two packages out there somewhere since march one in Detroit and the other in Chicago don’t know if I will ever see them .

Just out of curiosity. Do you need to magnetically protect it so that it does not get “damaged” while going through postal systems?

At least it was just sitting there; I was once waiting for a package that kept returning to the same distribution center in another country over and over again, with a “cannot find city <my country> in <other country>” update in between.
(Incidentally, I just checked the tracking for an ebay order which right now says “flight landed in destination country: <city in another country>”. Logistics is hard…)
