Cheap Component Search

if done right, these modules and format wont be that expensive at all. for instance im finishing off an envelope generator now that after panel/pcb the parts would be overall £6/7. stuff like the filter is under £10 and the vclfo is not far off! so please chat parts that relate to all of the modules on this topic!

Regarding US suppliers

Some of my favorites have been -

Modular Addict - 9mm Alpha Pots, Knobs, DIY PCB’s, etc.

SynthCube - Obscure Jacks and other various Modular Supplies.

SparkFun - This is specifically where I get my 2 Pin Molex Connectors, but they have tons of other stuff as well.

Love My Switches - I often buy the TruConnect 1/4" Jacks from here.

Perfect Circuit - Great for Eurorack 16 to 10 Pin Cables, and other various supplies.

There are some obvious others for really common parts, like Tayda, Mouser, etc.

For IC’s I often utilize Amazon Prime and Ebay.
Over the last year, having Amazon Prime has probably saved me over 300 in shipping on random parts orders… lol

Hope some of these help others!"

JACK SOCKETS :-

I can confirm these work and are nice and cheap!

I suppose I’ll have to buy a job lot of big jack cables and big sockets. I also need some larger-value capacitors, I think I’ve got plenty of lower value ones. Lots of resistors, LEDs, and a decent amount of stripboard. One module I may experiment with will be a solderless breadboard with a Eurorack power supply on the rails and a few pots, switches and jacks. I may use some of Mutable Instruments Breadboard Friends (link below).

The board must be easily removable so I can build a board on the desk and plug it in. Perhaps I’ll turn the panel into a small door that the breadboard can be clipped behind.

Hey all,

I took some time and collected links of common components used in these projects.

Tayda lets you group Favorited components so you can just add a bunch of items to the cart at once. Good for stuff you run out of a lot like jacks and pots.

This is a godsend caustic, I’ll finally be able to buy only the stuff i need and not 5000 of a single transistor! Thank you

Im thinking about taking the stripboard layout Sam posts on patreon and doing full BOM for tayda or other places. I can post the BOMs on threads discussing the different builds, but im not sure how or if we should include the stripboard layouts. I totally understand if Sam wanted to restrict distribution. We wouldnt need to include the layout with the BOM, but i think it would keep things all nice and tidy.

@lookmumnocomputer, whats your thoughts?

Wow, great list!
10V might be a bit low for the 100µF capacitor as the typical power supply is +/-12V

Edit: also, you should not mix 74LSxx and 74HCxx chips, their input and output voltages are not completely compatible. I would recommend using 74HCxx, because their outputs are closer to the rails and they are compatible with the 4000 series.

hey caustic its fine!@ that would be cool!!! usually with the stripboard layouts they are public i’m not sure off the top of my head if there are any atm that aren’t only Patreon! so of course if you wanted to do that kind of stuff by all means go ahead

THANK YOU for this list Caustic! I have been trying to source parts for Sam’s creations here in the US for the last 2 months. I have never done any of this before and am learning as I go. I am that person who took Sam’s “don’t be scared to try it” as a dare. So here I am.

I am hoping that I could get some questions answered, please?

  1. I recently purchased these trim pots from someone on Ebay: https://www.oddwires.com/baoter-3296-100k-ohm-cermet-potentiometer-trimpot-trimmer-2-pack/

I mis-read the BOM and looked for the 10k, 20k, and 100k 3296 pots and not the 3296W pots. It looks like these should still work, but wanted to be sure just in case?

  1. For the 1222 Sam says to pick up “Eurorack power cables” with a link to the Thonk website. There’s quite a few options listed on that link page so I am wondering what to get? He also mentioned there’s a video to come on how to make them. Is there a parts list for the cables so I can get the parts I need while I am ordering everything else? I saw a few things that Caustic listed but wanted to make sure I have everything.

  2. Please be nice with this question as I am learning here. The BOM for the 1222 has the same link both for the 1nf and 10nf ceramic capacitors. It looks like the link for the 10nf is the incorrect one? What’s the correct link for the 1nf? I am asking because I thought I could just buy an assortment kit of ceramic disc capacitors that had all of the values I needed for Sam’s modules like 1nf, 10nf, 2n2, etc…, but I found there was a lot more to capacitors than just a value like voltage, tolerance, or things like Z5U vs X7R, etc… So now I feel like I cannot purchase an assortment kit for capacitors (ceramic or elecrolytic.) Am I wrong?

  3. Has anybody been able to source the 12 way rotary switch here in the US? The cheapest I can find it is on Ebay shipped from the UK for roughly $11. Rapid’s shipping rates to the US are ridiculous and start at $33 so that’s out. If someone has a US supplier and/or can get it cheaper than $11 please let me know. Here’s a link to the guy I found:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Taiwan-Alpha-SR2611F011238F5BDNL-Break-Before-Make-Rotary-Switch-1-Pole-12-Way/362562612745

I found that this US Ebay shop has some of the best prices (that I could find) for the following: (They will also combine shipping.)
https://www.ebay.com/str/mdfly

3mm diffused LED’s - any color .02/each 5mm diffused LED's - any color .02/each
Resistors: 200 of a single value - $1.49 to $1.69

Thanks in advance for answers to any of these questions!

This thing is great if you know you’re going to be making a lot of your own cables.
Not at all required, can do the same with a Vise, but the components it comes with plus the crimp tool is well worth the value (in my eyes)

Hey there @popflier!

  1. The style he uses in this is a “top adjustment” or “Vertical” Cermet pot 3296w. The product description in the link you gave looks right to me. I will link below the same from Tayda just in case, but you probably have ones that work already.
  2. To make your own, you need something that can clamp. I use a cheap vise, but I suppose careful application of force with other methods may work. Making the eurorack cables needs three components. The ribbon cable, the IDC socket, and the IDC socket connector. In the case of eurorack, its 16 pins (2x8). I print out a reference of the pin-out for the power bus to make sure i set everything up right. Find that below.
  3. A lot of us are still learning bud, myself included. That list above is just work I did that I didn’t want other to have to do as well. As @Riggidyboo points out, a capacitors capacitance can be represented in different units. Its like saying either 1 meter or 1000 mm. Means the same thing. You see this sometimes for reasons unknown to me. In this case, the BOM just listed the same link twice. No biggy! What i tend to do is buy the ceramic variety whenever i can, its cheaper and they dont have a polarity to get wrong (doesnt matter how you put it in). That said, the 1nf (nanofarad) caps in the BOM are the same as a 0.001uf (microfarad) cap in capacitance. I just print out a chart and reference it just in case (every time) also I label it on my baggies.

What i did was just look up the values used in all of the projects and grab a couple hundred of them. Feel free and alter that plan by grabbing a little bit of a variety. Tayda doesnt care about small orders of individual components, the support there has told me that they strive to cater to the hobbyist.

Rotary Switch:

EDIT: As @Riggidyboo mentioned, the original link I posted was make before break, I think Sam mentioned you needed break before make in a build video if i recall.

ROTARY SWITCH 1 POLE 12 POSITION ALPHA SR2611F
https://www.taydaelectronics.com/rotary-switch-1-pole-12-position-alpha-sr2611f.html
$1.69 / £1.29

Also, feel free to buy from ebay if you find a better deal, but the costs for the 3mm led is the same at tayda. If you are buying from them anyway, you can also save with shipping costs. The resistors are more expensive at Tayda,

LED 3MM BLUE
https://www.taydaelectronics.com/leds/round-leds/3mm-leds/led-3mm-blue-diffuse-lens.html
$0.02 / £0.015

$1.49 / 200 = $‭0.00745‬ per resistor
$1.69 / 200 = $‭0.00845‬ per resistor

Compare that to the $0.012 / £0.0092 you pay at Tayda, with variable quantities! For ‭$0.00455 / £0.0035 more in price, you can add these to your cart with other components if you are buying from them. that eats the cost. Additionally, if you dont need 200pcs, you save the difference there too!

Lets say you dont need 200x 43K resistors, and you only need say like 15. It costs you ‭$0.18‬ / £0.14, not $1.49 / £1.14, a savings of $1.31 / £1.00!
