I’m Tyler, aka Voltage_Vandal and I’ve been lurking for a couple weeks. It’s getting to be time to actually post so I thought I’d start with the introductions.
I live in Nashville, TN USA and the synth DIY bug first bit me a few years ago, but I ran in to some road blocks that caused me to put it on the back burner for a while. I started in earnest in late November, and I’m just cutting my teeth. I have a little formal background in music; I played clarinet all through public school and I’ve dabbled in drums, keys, guitar, and banjo since. When it comes to electronics, I’m a youtube scholar all the way.
My list of projects is small, but growing. I’ve assembled a couple modules from Black Noise(EG/LFO, Slew/LFO), built a simple amplifier based off an LM386, and cannibalized a toy cymbal and turned it into a CV trigger for my synth. My current work in progress is a custom Eurorack case made from a US army issued camp stove tin, ca WWII. Once that’s complete, my goal is to move more completely into DIY stuff. I love beeping and booping, but the thought of shelling out cash hand over fist for modules makes me cringe. And $300 for a boring ass box to put them in? Absolutely not. I’ve sourced parts for some of Moritz Klein’s projects that I want to try to build on stripboard, and I’d like to make a MIDI to CV module sometime in the not too distant future.
I’ve always had the DIY spirit, so I immediately fell in love with LMNC and find Sam to be a tremendous source of inspiration. I’m also a transplant here, and I haven’t had much luck making friends so far, so I’m happy to have found a community of people with similar interests and attitudes around sharing information. You all seem like really knowledgeable people, so I look forward to picking your brains and getting to know you!
Dear Colleagues,
Hello to everybody! I am pretty new to this hobby (2 months now) and of cause I am trying to build my first VCO. Previously I played around with Ableton and sometimes jamming with friends connected with a Kaossilator, Guitar and Mic. However, I wanted to have something to touch and understand (at least in part). Software is way to complex… This started my interesst in DIY Modular.
This weekend I managed to put together the HAGIWO RP2040 VCO. However, without using the Seeed XIAO but some Raspberry Pi Pico knockoff. Also i used a TL072 instead of the MCP6232. Although I am not absolutely sure if the VCO works 100% as meant by @HAGIWO it sounds pretty cool to me. A push button is on the way and I will replace the paper printout on the front panel with a printout on laser printable self-adhesive polyester label.
My next project will be a AS3340 based VCO and I hope I can manage to build the Hero VCO from @analogoutput
Hi !
I’m Obturatuur, I haven’t been on a forum in years so I’m not sure if I’m doing stuff right. I live in Paris (hope my english writing skills are good enough) and have always been interested in old optical and overall analog stuff. I never really got into it, but rather grew up in it.
My dad was a passionate, he always had dozens of tube amps laying around, putting them apart and building new working ones from old discarded amps. But I never really got to really learn from him, I don’t really know why, because he tried to share his passion with me. Well that part worked because I now am amongst other thing a photographer and videographer, and I mostly love to work with analog glitches, using old optical stuff in ways it shouldn’t be used.
But I never learned a thing, I really just do stuff at random until it looks or sounds nice, and I am coming to the limit of what trial and error can bring me to and I need to start to have some idea of what I am doing to be able to keep getting better and doing more fun and complex projects. Hence why I joined this forum, to chat with people, ask questions and learn about the weird stuff I have lying around.
A few years back my dad passed away, leaving me with quite a lot of weird stuff. I can’t figure out exactly what most of it is, but I came to see it as some fun puzzle he left me. When I work on projects now it really feels likes some valuable father-daughter time.
I have achieved to repurpose and use some of it, but I really need some advice on the rest !
So yeah, I hope to be able to find some answers here and contribute to the forum.
So Hi, danbass I guess. Built a DIY Elmyra as a hobbyist kit last year and decided to jump head first into Kosmo as my first modular foray. I’ve got 18 modules at various states in the queue, chipping away at resistors after starting last week. Don’t really have a background in electronic music, but haven’t played any music with anyone live for 10 years, so giving this a shot to see if it’s what’s next for me.
Closest background I have was I made big electric brewing system panels from scratch for friends. No PCBs, all point to point, 50amp 220 systems.
Been lurking and reading for months, wanted to stay away from Pi or Arduino driven systems (I have to deal with too much python already) and really appreciate the community that was built up here. @Dud and @analogoutput both stand out though it looks like I missed the wave of PCBs that were being put out over the last few years.
Don’t expect to be posting often, but I wanted to contribute, say hello, and applaud all of you for how inclusive and open the community is.
Thanks! I think I want to be up and running with a few modules before starting to order my own PCBs. Was just an in the moment reflection on missing out on the K25 series of utilities and your Hero//Sidekick modules as an example (I was one your tindie orders from a few weeks ago).
All in due time, but I suppose I need to accept that PCB orders might be in my future.
Again, incredible how quick and encouraging of a reply on just my first post. So very kind @analogoutput.
HI i´m new here on this board and wondering … do we finally have a final schematic here for a APC design that works on 12V and can use CV, and or gate for a build? wanted to give it a start with an APC, the super simple oscillator, MS-20, and baby8 started the case today and got alot of caps in the mail
@Obturatuur Welcome, your English writing skills are excellent.
Would be interesting to see what you have made!
@danbass , I think there will be more PCB kits on the way, it was discussed on a recent live stream. and as @analogoutput says there’s a bunch of community designed modules ( i need to release a few of mine that do actualy work )
… as the 556 datasheet tells me that it can handle even voltages higher than 12V
so when adding CV1 and CV2 as sam does what range would these be? and when i look at this simple circuits APCpro module they add control knobs for internal CV (0-12V?) what does that contribute to the circuit what was not there with the original controls?
I’ve been involved in weird/non-standard music for most of my adult life, starting in improv/jam bands in my teens, making and releasing harsh noise throughout my 20s and 30s, etc. Over the last number of years I’ve moved into DIY and similar through the monome ecosystem (norns shield, especially) and Eurorack as well. Like many of you, I was eventually suggested some of Sam’s videos on YouTube and, well, you can fill in the rest I’m sure
I start this hobby about year ago with almost no electrical knowledge but it’s being pretty great.
I’m Japanese and that probably explain my bad English(or I just have to study English more seriously)
I’m not any type of authorized engineer nor artist, just enjoy making stuff.
My another hobby is artwork and I using it everywhere in my synth.
Due to the lack of my English skill, I will not post many in this forum.
But I want to say thank you to many people in here who share knowledge and makes me possible to build synth.
