Best news I’ve heard all day…
Some of the properties around there are rented. Maybe she was told to hop it. Or maybe she fled when the police started asking awkward questions. I do hope she’s gone for good.
Yep, its full on election time here in the States:
Trump loyal right-wing soldier cosplayers harassing and intimidating folks out there in Kentucky. Going to be fun when we see this stuff when people are in line to vote.
If you are in the States, make sure you are registered to vote. If you need help i can dig out resources to help you. This election is close even in my home state of GA. Many states have mail in voting, or require that you request an absentee ballot. I’ve done this for a few elections, and its actually way easier since you can do research on your own time while filling out the form.

I really wish I hadn’t watched that video. I have co-workers in KY. It makes me fear that a fair election will result in bloodshed. America used to be a nice place to live.
When people i know talk about moving to other places, I dont blame them. Although, i think if you want to make a difference, you do it in the places where you live.
Dealing with radicalized people is not easy, but if we value our society we need to participate in it.
Before I read your comment I was struggling to work out who the guys in Camo were… Thought they were MP peace keepers at first…
If they turned up in the UK we would have Police Armed Response Vehicles, Dog Teams and Tactical Response units deployed.
Do you have any marginal parties othre than the Democrats and Republicans, if so do they ever win any elections?
I am not big into politics anywhere mind…
The USA’s politics are very binary and our current system is not likely to encourage the voting of a 3rd independent party. This year, Maine passed “Ranked Choice” voting. Such a system would go a long way to curb our spiral into more and more radicalization. The issues here are that there are multiple radicalization pipelines (youtube, facebook, podcasts, fox news) that turn people into partisan thugs.
Its a mess, but I think that this shitfest of a situation is forcing people to get involved in politics when they normally wouldnt because they are jaded. I expect voter turnout to be the greatest it has been in years.
I fucking hate politics, but election years when so much is approaching an authoritative state, well i just cant stay out and have a clear conscience. I dont blame people for not wanting to read all of it.
These “proud boys” are not an uncommon sight lately. I think its pretty telling when even in states where even the “liberals” have open carry they think this shits nuts.
I know more about American current affairs than I know about my own country. I got into the habit during the 2008 election season, and I still tend to follow American news more closely in an election year. I’m currently listening obsessively to the podcast versions of the MSNBC weekday evening spots, especially Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes and Nicolle Wallace. I’m enough of a politics geek to remember Nicolle from the John McCain campaign in 2008.
My son knows my interests so this evening he emailed me this truly chilling article from the November edition of The Atlantic which has been published early because of its timeliness. Stay safe and don’t forget to vote, my American brothers and sisters. I’ll be gnawing my fingernails every day until the inauguration.
Google tells me that’s a view of Derwent Isle from the Keswick end of Derwent Water. Thought the view looked familiar.
I often forget that Trump is doing it the hard way. In the UK it’s much easier for the state apparatus to slip politely into authoritarian mode.
When the rules mean you can’t teach some of the mainstream works of Iain Banks in a British school, it raises ugly memories of the excesses of Thatcherism.
Edit: to say nothing of Charles Dickens. One of my sisters studied Hard Times for her GCE O levels in the seventies. Alas, the novel takes far too many pops at laissez-faire to qualify for modern syllabus according to the DfE of 2020.
Edit 2: who said this? : “An economic system centred on the god of money needs to plunder nature to sustain the frenetic rhythm of consumption that is inherent to it.”
And this? " . In some circles it is argued that the current economy and technology will solve all environmental problems, the same way one says, with a non-academic language, that the problems of hunger and poverty in the world will be solved simply with market growth. It is not a matter of economic theory, that perhaps no one today dares to defend, but their settlement in the factual development of the economy. Those who do not argue with the words support it with deeds, when one does not seem to worry about the right level of production, a better distribution of wealth, a responsible care for the environment or the rights of future generations. The behavior says that the goal of maximizing profits is sufficient.”
indeed,
Walked down to the lake, feed the Geese ( I am sure these Canadian guys spend more time leaching off us than their supposed home )
Walked up to the town to get a chippy ( I had an underwhelming Cumberland sausage with the chips) . Got some new walking shoes from generic retailer on discount for £17… Poped in a few charity shops and then back to the car.
Lovely sunshine…
£7.60 for parking! handed the ticket to a young couple as we left as there was still 4hrs on it…
Then drove back the long way over Honister Pass, Newlands pass and back home.
Just great to get out in our wonderful landscape, I know it’s miniature compared to some amazing places in the world but it’s so compact it’s fabulous.
I think that’s because American current affairs has such a big influence on it’s closest allies.
Also, boys walking around with assault rifles is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. What on earth are they trying to prove? Is it working?
@Bitnik
I saw this on reddit this morning. I was wondering if I’d see it here.
@Vumnoo
It isnt uncommon at all. It is a terror tactic, and yes it has a history of working. Lately, this is done in key areas like Kentucky where the local elections are especially important.
@twinturbo
That sounds like a calm as fuck weekend. I had to spend most of mine troubleshooting all the PCs in my house. All i can say is, im glad for stupid chill podcasts and a phone.
Those two anti-capitalist statements were both from Pope Francis. So a state funded Catholic school like my old school in Sunderland would be in breach for teaching the kids a Papal encyclical like the lesson where they taught me John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris in the early seventies.
I’m not a fan of Catholicism, but these are serious works of moral philosophy that contribute to an ongoing global debate on the future of civilization.
They’re trying to spread fear. It could become a very serious problem if these people show up armed at courts where the validity of ballots is to be determined. Or at polling places and official drop-boxes. Intimidation of voters has a very long and shameful history in America.
I’m pretty sure they have a word for that, you know a person or persons who spread fear?
Glad to see so many normal (if you can call electronics synth heads normal) people here. (: The situation is a sad one.
I have debated the inclusion of discussions of current events in this forum for a while. As long as its contained, it should be fine. This is kinda the vent thread / talkin about how you are coping with current events thread so i also didnt want to remove ppl’s ability to vent to like minded folks.
I think the key is that we seem to share a common set of trustworthy facts. If somebody started saying global warming is a hoax or Covid-19 is propagated by 5G, it might get a bit awkward.
