Meanwhile the 4 day doubling time of Covid-19 infections in one part of Greater Manchester in the English Northwest is believed to have been exacerbated by denialist social media activism.
This is the sort of thing that brings me close to screaming. Climate, vaccinations, and now simple public health precautions. Everything requiring personal responsibility and community solidarity is turned into a conspiracy theory.

I have seen this named as the epistemic crisis and think it is a good explanation for what we are seeing, Cory doctorow talked about this a few times:
When social scientists investigate conspiracists, they find people whose beliefs are the result of real trauma (like losing a loved one to opioids) and real conspiracies (the Sackler family and other Big Pharma barons suborning their regulators).
The combination of real trauma and real conspiracies gives ALL conspiracies explanatory power. This is brilliantly documented in @annamerlan’s “Republic of Lies,” one of the most important books on the rise of conspiratorial thinking I’ve read.
I can not find the other video where he explained it even better I would say, but I will search again…

Mind blown. When I think of those whom seem to be most caught up, I either know of or suspect significant unresolved trauma in their lives.

They’re fools. The government has confirmed that the epidemic has resumed an exponential rise nationwide (and that with the flu season just around the corner) and their response is…to tell all the pubs to close at 10pm.

What is it with toilet paper hoarding? I can understand people going mad and buying more tin cans and dry goods in case fresh food deliveries are disrupted, but the only conceivable reason to buy more toilet paper is that you think your neighbours are idiots and will empty the shelves. Toilet paper lasts forever and the producers aren’t going to suddenly stop making and shipping it.
Even so, if you buy just one or two extra rolls they’ll last you long enough for the shops to introduce rationing and solve the problem just like they did in March.
And this makes me wonder why we haven’t installed a bidet in our bathroom.

For it to be the tragedy of the commons, there would have to be material harm resulting. All that ever seems to come from these mad rushes is a few photos of empty shelves and pictures of idiots with their shopping trolleys piled high with about six months worth of toilet paper. The shops start refusing to serve the idiots more than they need long before anybody who actually needs toilet paper notices that there was a panic.
Shops have management and supply chains and demand monitoring. They’re about as far from commons as it’s possible to get.
I just bought a toilet bidet kit. Let’s see if I can make some good come out of this plague of stupidity and greed.
Edit: by the way my daughter’s horrible neighbour, the one who harassed my daughter and beat me up, seems to have vanished. We spotted what looks like new people moving in next door. We’ve taken down the silly surveillance cameras. I hope that’s the end of it.

In the US I can trace a lot of the toilet paper hoarding back to a CDC briefing where they tried to reassure everyone by saying “Be prepared to stay inside for two weeks, stock up on canned goods, make sure you have enough toilet paper.” Not that everyone heard it, but once there was visible scarcity it was an avalanche.
