It would be great if this would directly hit your eyes Sam Or somebody else that has a relatively quick way of getting in touch with you.
I think this would largely help many starters, as they could just mail the list of the module they are trying to build to a parts vendor and they could easyly pack together the full bucket, needed for assembly.
What would be essential, that that document comes without the links and additional info. As the supplier has just to see what parts are needed. And the more in depth BOM for build exists eitherway.
Cause i have a hard time, not getting overwhelmed by all the things needed, and figure that that may be a common situation for first timers.
So if that would be possible to get that in a format, suppliers could input conveniently, this would be a large portion of help
I am curious what other forum members think about this !
I have made a few BOMs and this post in the Cheap Components thread:
If you need assistance with any specific part, just search, most likely we have found sources for them already. If you cant find it by searching, you can feel free to post a thread about it!
Have you found a parts vendor willing/able to do that? The problem with this approach is that if you’re not specific enough they will have a ton of options (mouser has ~300 different 100k resistors, and that’s after narrowing it down to through-hole thin film) and if you’re too specific you end up in this situation. There’s no way their shipping & handling fees will cover the work needed to do this for a tiny order from a tiny customer. Also, sourcing on a build-by-build basis isn’t cost effective in itself, and only you know what you plan to build next.
If you find it too cumbersome to source components and just want to build things, I’d suggest getting DIY kits that ship with components and PCBs. There’s a lot of them in the synth world, since many manufacturers are tiny operations that can lower their own costs by selling both pre-built modules and kits, and can spread the overhead across many customers (if their kits business get too big, they’ll outsource the kitting to a 3PL supplier anyway).
Alternatively, do as @Caustic says – do the best you can with the resources we’ve collected in this forum, and ask for help if you get stuck on some specific component.
Thanks for the very long and roundup text but i think its not necessesary to take directions of that way.
The only thing i was saying is, that it could be a good help for people that order from smaller places or have a place to go locally who offer a service like this.
And well, Sam has to put them into the form eitherway, so i thought it could be pretty easy todo with no extra effort
Just a save before inputting the extras and voilla.
Or just the bom with all the info but in a interactible dataform. Excel for example. Than its easy to delete for this exact need.
And of its not possible ill find a way / just write all the info by myself into a form. Cause i have found a place where they demanded it like that.
Ill add the shoplink later.
I think we get what you mean .you mention a spread sheet . there are several different formats , which one would accommodate everyone ? thats hard to say . I don’t think Sam or anyone else here at this point specifically made their stuff with going into the module business in mind . easier for us means more work for Sam or whomever is offering the pcb / module and would ultimately have to cost more and take away from their fun / life . besides this is DIY a list at all is a plus . there are parts lists for just about every LMNC module plus lists of suppliers . for most of us parts procurement isn’t a one size fits all , we are from all over the world and than there is availability ,cost , etc. to consider . please don’t take this the wrong way , it is a good idea . its just who has the time to do it ?
KiCad does provide a way to export a BOM to various formats including a csv file. And Sam provides a csv/xlsx version of the BOM, at least he did for the 2399. But I would guess Sam doesn’t use KiCad’s BOM export because the 2399 BOM had errors in part quantities that wouldn’t have occurred. Nor am I surprised because generally the human readable export forms are only barely human readable; it’s why I wrote a Markdown export script. Besides, such a csv file would not contain specific part numbers unless those were put into the schematic (for each and every part individually, unless they were made part of a custom symbols library), and that is, as @devicex says, time consuming and, as @fredrik says, of limited utility.
I think that’s what’s likely to happen; would you be sharing your forms here? If the idea is indeed as useful as you think it would be, others would appreciate it. Kind of like the Americanized BOMs people post.
More Americanized BOM’s would rule. When I get them done I’ll be happy to post mine. People may decide to pick and mix lines from my BOM and lines from another BOM.
I thought they’d all been done but in fact there are two is one I don’t see anywhere. They can be hard to find, e.g. one’s in the cheap components topic, some are in the topic for their module, some are in their own topic, one is on Sam’s projects page.
it is getting a bit messy . I can’t believe how much I miss and it seems like I check everything . you were really good about how you organized your builds that you shared .
thanks good idea . and if possible [ yes I know it takes time ] folks who are offering [ thank you ] your PCB’s if you could drop your BOM’s here that would be awesome .
The materials I’ve been looking for are the best materials sourced from eBay or Mouser but for me. I had done a few around March - April 2020. It became increasingly difficult for me to choose materials especially when some of the BOM’s I had done were before a lot of new knowledge was adapting to the choices. I realize the BOM’s I make are but what I like. I do wish to help anyone with the highlights I found within eBay or Mouser and they can pick and mix with other BOM’s that are already there. I also want to do one for every module as it may help someone searching for some hard to find materials.
the BOM 's are good . its hard to link vendors , everyone has their preferences . and while github is ok myself I find it not so intuitive trying to find stuff there .
Sounds excellent, if you do post yours, links to them could be added to the wiki post linked above. (The BOMs themselves might best be added to the topics for the individual modules.)
I would have put the link in my post but didn’t know how .
that works only if the title of the thread is about that biuld though .
I have found that some of the projects are spread over a few threads / topics .
I believe there is a topic, started by Sam, for each module with the title being the name of the module. Of course there are sometimes other topics relating to the same module. But the “official” topic seems the best place for BOMs, to me.
guess I was referring to non LMNC stuff . not that any of you who share your stuff owe anyone building your offered PCB’s anything , it would just make it easier and hopefully less random questions being asked of you . and as a side note including links to github and forum threads along with that BOM would probably take care of 99 % of questions about the builds .
