I got a box of parts from Digi Key today.
I also have one of those. Picked up at a car boot sale. There are some small valves (Nuvistor) in mine if I remember correctly.
Thanks @ Andydextrous
One small valve (lower right) which I can’t identify.
And 7 PNP transistors, so the ground terminal connects to +18V. I’ll have to think carefully about how/whether to share power with the ShedSynth.
It all works, which is good because radio repairs isn’t my thing at all.
Started carefully with 18V from two PP3 batteries, nice clean sine wave (so not really a fruity sub-bass sound, although the sine goes a bit wonky if I power with only 9V), slightly furry-looking square wave, geared frequency knob turns nicely (with occasional drop-outs as the pot is turned for the first time in a while), nice clunky range switches.
Then finally I investigated the mains PSU, which seems OK but I’d like to come up with something a bit less deadlyish.
Some more info here: Venner Wide Range Oscillator Type 625/2
Looks very nice! I see that it draws about 25mA? If that’s right, you can build a dedicated supply based on the LM7918 regulator.
Thanks @K.ostas,
the Venner signal generator turns out to work (with only a slight flattening at the top of the sine output) powered from the synthesizer’s -12V & 0V, so that sorts out my ground problem.
Looks like an old style lamp module. Like the kind used in electrical goods.
Whats inside? I cant see for the shine. There are very few types of valve to choose from.
Sub-miniature triode?
Thanks for the reply @Farabide.
Not a lamp or a thermionic valve, I think it’s something like this (pictures found on eBay):
A thermistor with a heating coil inside a vacuum tube, perhaps to stabilise supply voltage?
The painted text on mine says something like “R23”.
Luckily it seems to be working, so I’ll keep my hands off.
I only see a spider.
I would love a kosmo version of this.
Both ordered on the same day and arrived three days later using the cheapest shipping.
We truly live in a time of miracles.
Got the 1000mm Schroff rail and threaded strips to make a more serious case, plus bisected this Gator 4U rack to use as the bodies (was about 12" deep, 2 x 6" gets me 208HP with 175mm tall panels and plenty of room to not worry about board size/mounting.)
I got lucky cause I couldn’t afford everything right now, but the site that had the rails only had one in stock, so they let me ignore the minimum orders on them!
Edit: Wow, pictures of black things really highlight how dusty my incense habit makes everything.
first instances of #2221 CFM out in the wild…
(I ordered three instances, two to integrate in to my cases an one as backup)
I had some nice mono 3mm sockets that I used on my modular build, unfortunately these were coming to an end and not available from this supplier anymore, last batch was bought 5 years ago.
Today I was looking for something else to send to another DIY guy and I opened what I thought was a JX10 display box and FIP coil only to be presented with 100 of these sockets…
Good times
Looking forward to receiving mine; expect mine to arrive before the end of the week!
My first ever PCB order!
10x HeroVCO, 20x SidekickVCO
Thanks to @analogoutput for the design, tnx @Willi359 for chipping in for a few of these. Will send them on ASAP!
