Line out module / how to protect my amp

I need some help finding info on how to condition your final audio signal for your amplifier input.
From the research i’ve done i need 1Vpp for most consumer gear. I get that i could just use a simple pot but i want to make sure that the signal clips when its above 500mV(ish) so i dont blow up my amp.

Maybe I’m thinking about it wrong but i dont think i need to reinvent the wheel here.

any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

This thread has some discussion:

(including some dude  arguing that if your amp has a volume control and isn’t built by weirdos odds are it’ll handle a hot signal just fine, but you can always insert a simple voltage divider if it’s clipping.)

A trick ive heard is to start with low volume, and slowly bump it up.
