Korg SQ-64 Poly Sequencer

I think I need this (for some definition of need). Feels more intuitive to me than the BeatStep Pro.

Ew! Ticks all the GAS boxes but not for me.
Try a 64 step version of the big button. With maybe a small square button that pulses faintly red. (Add MIDI if you want). Too many solutions for no real problem.

I seriously considered picking up a SQ-1 when I was frustrated with the analog output on my midibox Seq V4. But couldn’t quite justify it.

This looks even more tempting. But…the price is just a bit above my threshold for giving in. Don’t get me wrong…it seems like a fair price. Just…more than I can splurge buy and if I take the time to save for one I’ll probably talk myself into spending it on something else instead. So it’s a personal price limit issue not a “this is priced ridiculously” issue.

At $299/£269, it’s priced exactly as I’d expect

It’s totally a reasonable price. But while the SQ-1 is priced at a “splurge” point where I can be tempted to buy it without putting a lot of thought into it…this is into the range where I have to stop and think about if I really want to spend that when I already have a really powerful sequencer.

Of course…right now my sequencer is a pain to use. But if I finish building a case and power supply for it then it will be quite a bit more flexible and powerful than this. But…I do like the interface on this. Though…the BLM interface for my SeqV4 is even more impressive…but I’m increasingly unlikely to put the time and money into building one of those. (that would cost more than the SQ-64 just in parts!)

Mostly I’m upset because I almost had myself talked into getting a beat step pro…but this seems like a potentially better option for just a bit more. But…the big buttons on the beat step are kind of temping for performance. My biggest concern with this is it seems a little small and fiddly for performance use.

Which is also my complaint about my midibox seq. It’s designed for live performance use…but everything is just a bit too close together for my taste and I find the smallish knobs on the encoders a bit too fiddly - and there’s no room to install larger ones since they need to line up with the LCD’s for the UI to make sense.

But the interface on the beat step just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I’ve never actually tried one, but trying to figure it out from videos, photos, and manuals it just doesn’t seem to click with my brain which is why I haven’t pulled the trigger on getting one yet. I can see it for rhythm…but for melodic sequencing it just doesn’t make sense to me, and it’s more than I can justify spending just for rhythm.

I need to stop procrastinating and just finish my midibox sequencer, add the trigger outputs and give it’s drum mode a try. I just can’t get myself in the mood to do it lately though. If I didn’t have the midibox I’d be placing a pre-order for this right now. But already having the midibox makes it hard for me to justify spending this much.

This thing looks really useful.

But I already got then keystep pro a few months ago. So I’m done buying items that go outside of my rack for the time being.
