welcome to you here
hello Trudy . all kinds of DIY around here enjoy .
Hello I am Synthguy (Robert Trompeter) from West Coast California Bay Area. I have been doing electronics, synths and modules for 34 years . Listen to Sam and his videos and music I am a big fan of Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Devo, etc . Sam is on the right path to awesome glory as a synthgod . He knows what he is talking about . I am here to help him out anyway I can. I have degrees in engineering , mediacal and math/physics and a vast wall of synth modules , she calls it still the guest room of the home.
welcome here @SYNTHGUY
Hi Robert .
LOL yes I am lucky too , she puts up with my " stuff " being everywhere .
Hi Robert, welcome! We are a couple of others from the Bay Area too. I’m in Santa Clara.
4 Months and have never spotted this thread… LOL…
So I am Rob, I live in the north of England, a stones throw from the wonderful “Lake District” I imagine it’s lovely and quiet there at present, Being “Bank Holiday” it would normaly be rammed with visitors.
I work in I.T. with a hand in various aspects but mainly Networking, Virtualisation and Security. For a financial institution.
Previously I worked in a school for 15 years where a small part of my role involved Stage Sound and Lighting, so I have a good knowledge of Lighting Producion and control…
I am into cars, have 8 assorted vehicle (not all road legal) and can manage most jobs from a brake disk to a V8 swap on a Jaguar…
One of the cars is a “Haynes Roadster” self build… But that’s been stalled a while…
Over the years I have been a MOD/Member on many car forums in the UK.
But after finaly selling a long term project ( I.E. not seen the road in 20 years )… I had some spare cash and spare energy…
So I started to get into this modular thing, re-kindled my electronics skills, and have been building for 4 months without even createing a single wave as yet.
No musical skill either playing or technical knowledge…
I like to fix things ( rebuilt TV PSU last week, fixed brushes on washing machine, etc ) and would rather learn how something failed than throw it away and simply replace.
Welcome Trudee, Twin turbo and Robert, and anyone else. glad you’ve joined this wonderful board. Beau
Welcome Trudy, I was in the same position a year ago, not knowing much about electronics, still don’t but I have managed to make most the LMNC modules with success.
Even though you’ve pretty much been here from the start I’m going to say “Welcome TwinTurbo! I think you’ll like it here!” because that’s what we do in this thread and no one else did it.
To be honest, seems mad!
5 months ago I started to try to cobble together the arduino 8-step… Found forum, bought a load of modules, and started designing my own…
Previously I had more projects than time and energy… Now I have even more projects, less energy, but more enthusiasm… That last bit is the key.
That gives me hope
On You Tube I am known as Fathomistic Fantasy. I am a Christian, babyfur, and tulpamancer. I only mention my spiritual beliefs to give people an idea of my back ground. I played guitar in the beginning at a couple different Church’s. I played piano on my own time and then took up cello. I became interested in modular sound synthesis because I fell in love with YT electronic musicians. It took a while before I was really good at it. I am grateful for the band members I have been with. After moving several years ago I have not found another band to be in. I also got busy with a verity of projects. I am a writer, artist and DIY’r.
.
I studied electronics on and off ever since I was little. My math teacher in 4 & 5 grade gave me his college book in electronics. Its hard to believe that this was 2003 roughly. I was really big into Robots and was in a club that participated in the first ever Vex Robotics competition. This was back when XP existed and normally you had 2G Ram or less on your computer. Speed forward to coupe years back I began to have trouble with college. I was taken from intermediate algebra to precalculus. Then told to pick up the pace. I got lost when we started synthetic division. Needless to say I dropped out of college.
.
I have been studying Python, C/C++, and recently ASM. I have been experimenting and studying how MIDI works. I am still working my way into operational amplifiers and sound processing chips. I don’t have the perfect grasp on analogue yet. It was only the past couple of months that I learned how VCO’s are tuned. I did not know it involved more than just the frequency. Being able to control the gain in volt per octave is also critically important. In current time I am trying to get my American Drivers License. 29 years old and I don’t know how to drive a vehicle. Horrible right? I am also making my way into building my own analogue and digital synth rig. Over the span of 5 years approximately I spent a couple thousand USD on electronics parts. My family helped out with my equipment such as an O-scope, signal generator, programmers, etc. I look forward to learning a great deal and making new friends in this forum.
Howdy,
I’m into just about everything electronic. I’ve been playing guitar/banjo/uke for some time. I’m no expert. I got into music hardware a few years ago because I hate having money. I love building things/tinkering and generally understanding how my stuff works. My current project is building 7 or so LMNC modules. I finally ordered the parts after hours of living in spreadsheets and shopping, something I had been procrastinating on (but hey we love procrastination here). In theory, it’ll be a fully functional synth in a week or two from whenever the pots arrive. And I’ll probably need to order parts to make the ribbon cable connectors, but one thing at a time.
I recently decided to start trying to share some music. I’d been avoiding this as it meant doing things on a computer, but I think I’m at a point where I hardly have to touch a computer to get something mediocre onto the internet.
I look forward to your help troubleshooting when I inevitably solder the wrong resistor on or something.
hello heckseven , ain’t that the truth …
we are a mixed group here any one is welcome . in the general posts we leave the politics and religion behind and mostly talk about music / electronics , it helps keep things civil . but thanks for telling us your back ground here , it is always interesting to hear who everyone is . so welcome , hope you enjoy your stay .
I sometime make small references to my background in spiritual music. I find it difficult to explain things when people ask questions that may have some involvement in my Christian beliefs. I respect the rules. However, trying to explain something and leaving gaping holes makes things confusing. If that makes sense. Correct me if I am wrong, but mentioning who I am is not a discussion upon religion. Its merely stating identity.
I’m an atheist, and as a person who listens to a whole lot of ecclesiastical music I love to hear about people who sing or play music as part of a religion. Recently I described the Fauré Requiem as “the most enchantingly beautiful piece of music.”
We don’t tend to talk about sex or politics either. It can sometimes feel a bit like an injection when there’s not a good precedent to bring up one of the three subjects, like the underlying reason for mentioning it is to stir the pot. I don’t think anyone cares what your faith is here as long as you like Sam’s content though.
sorry didn’t mean to dis you our your beliefs , of course it is no problem in the context of who you are and what your background is . I have meant awesome [ people ] singers and keyboard players that have learned their craft in the church.
