Hi,

My name is James Mawson and I’m a middle aged guy from Australia. Through the lockdowns I started messing around with microcontrollers and analogue electronics to make things go beep. I’m still pretty new to it.

I’ve started a new website to document what I learn as I go though: Synth It Yourself

Apart from Synth DIY, I like Linux and cats and firepit cooking! Not sure what else to say except glad to be here.

Welcome to the forum James. I am from Australia as well. More specifically Victoria. I am getting back into the analogue stuff it seems. I went down the Euro Rack hole for a while…now playing Kosmo as a side hobby. Enjoy.

I’m from Victoria too!

Yet to dabble in anything modular… I have some (minimal) background mucking around with microcontrollers… at the moment I’m basically just putting together some simple analogue circuits on some breadboards and seeing what I can do with them from Arduino and Raspberry Pi

Welcome in the forum

High everyone!

I just built the 1222 VCO and I am stoked!! I have wanted to build an analog synth for a while and this is the first step for me. I have dabbled in electronics, music, and melting metal for a while now. Casting metal is my main jam :sunglasses:

Anyways, I am having a little trouble tuning my 1222. I am working on the tracking part and all the octaves are pretty close except the highest. Any thoughts on this or a different section of the forum to post the question on?

Thanks! And it is great to meet everyone!

welcome , if you use the search thing type in 1222 VCO there will be a few threads about the VCO’s .

RV8 is the high frequency tracking trimmer, if that doesn’t take care of it I dunno…

Could also be that the resistor for the highest octave is not well matched? Then the tracking within the highest octave would be okay, but somewhat offset to the rest. Just a thought

Hello all, greetings from the state of Michigan, USA. First post here. Just wanted to say thanks for all of the helpful information and schematics that you’ve provided. I’m very new to synths, been a “alt rock” guy most of my life but within the last 2-3 years my music tastes have shifted to mostly indie and lo-fi/chillwave. Love all the different sounds that accompany it. Finally decided to make the plunge into dyi modular synth. Started with some kits but wanted more. So for the past 4 months I’ve been building modules on perf board (I know I should use stripboard, my sanity would still be intact) but I enjoy actually creating the circuits. Anyways heres some pictures of my build so far. It’s all half kozmo/half eurorack. For space reasons, I’ve kept all of the modules eurorack height. However they are attached to a dyi case with wooden rails and they use big jacks. Also, Ive been using transparent, colored acrylic so I can see my work past the pots and switches.

There are very few “shoulds” around here. Some of us use nothing but stripboard, others avoid it like the plague. Some build on perfboard or protoboard. Some use mainly PCBs, commercial or self-etched or custom fabricated. There have even been occasional forays into board-less dead bugs. It’s all good. Whatever floats your boat.

Thanks guys! Self etching my own boards would be pretty cool. Might look into that down the road. Learning pretty quickly that I’ll need to conserve space, both on the boards and panels. Unfortunately I dont have a dedicated room in my house for floor to ceiling modules. ONE DAY!!

Some people might have seen me in the stripboard threads already, but figured I’d pop over to the introduction thread.

I’m JonM - a 31 year old Canadian whos just starting to get into modular. I’ve been a bassist since I was ten, but have always been interested in synthesizers and specifically modular since my early teens but never got into it due to the high cost of entry. Last year it occurred to me that if I had just started out slow and bought a few modules a year since I started working, I would have had a crazy awesome rig by now. So that was the general plan - starting late now but I figured if I don’t just start at some point it’ll never happen. Then I discovered theres a big synth DIY community and that has greatly expedited things!

I bought a soldering iron, watched a bunch of videos and dove in. Attached is a picture of my rack this morning, and with the recent addition of a filter I have a basic mono synth voice. Left to right I have a mult kit from CCTV, a stripboard slew, Chipz oscillator (really just using for LFOs right now), AI Synthesis VCO kit, stripboard sub oct, AI mixer kit, Skul and Circuits ADSR kit, 256k Labs dual VCA, Erica Synths Polivoks VCF kit and a Dreadbox Ataxia.

Not really sure where I want to take it now, but I’m having a tonne of fun so far. Maybe the thing to do will be to sit with it a while and learn how to play it, as I’m as much of a beginner in that department as I am with soldering!

I registered here after finding the forum while searching for stripboard layouts and was just going to ask some questions and leave but it seems you’ve got a really great community here and everyone seems extremely helpful and knowledgeable so I think I’ll be sticking around! Probably won’t post a tonne when I’m not actively building or needing help, but I’ll definitely be here lurking in the shadows and learning what I can.
