Introductions: Say hello, tell us about yourself and your projects

Welcome to all new KOSMOnauts !

Welcome John , yeah that sounds familiar .

Welcome in modular land

@Switches_and_Chips
And others…

welcome

add you info on here and you can get added to the map

Servus! I am an astroparticle physicist from Hungary, living in Germany. I do a lot of electronic stuff (including teaching at the University of Erlangen/Nuremberg) and I love (making) electronic music so I started to combine these two hobbies and explore the world of modular synths recently, also to get away from Ableton/Reason+co and make everything from scratch.

My music career is quite flat and never went off really, but I only released a handful electronic tracks and mini-jams. I started making music with Reason 3, which might be the “reason” why I eventually felt in love with modular synths. Later I switched to Ableton Live but I always missed that modular feeling.
Here is my SoundCloud link in case you want to check tamasgal | Tamas Gal | Free Listening on SoundCloud but the newest entries are at least 6 years old mostly some mini-jams / track teasers.

It’s a pity that it took such a long time to realise that making (hardware) modules is so much fun… I guess it was also a question of money and equipment. Today I have a quite complete electronic workshop with a good set of measurement devices and really, tons of electronic components, so the entry threshold is much lower.

I hope to find help here because I am still confused about many things in the modular universe. On the other hand I also hope that I can provide some help when it’s about electronics or programming in general

My projects are currently very exploratory, I made a few VCOs and started with a 20cm tall DIY rack system (already ordered the aluminium plates) with 6.3mm jacks (I like those) and now I am looking for a beginner sequencer (probably Korg SQ 1) to get started. I will first read through the forum to avoid ask the same things over and over again

Cheers!
Tom

" I will first read through the forum to avoid ask the same things over and over again "
thats quite a lot of reading over . so it is kind of unavoidable to run into the same questions from time to time . we don’t get to shitty about that around here , someone will usually post a link to the thread that has the information you are looking for.

Welcome new Kosmonuts.

I have the condition that I must look for answers before I ask. It makes me have bookmarks on the forum to intelligent replies which I may / may not ever come back to. I don’t regret it though because we’ve had some very intelligent Kosmonuts here. Once I’ve done a hell of a lot more on my projects I should share more of my own finds. It’s taken me a long time to come to an intelligent realization about some frustration yet I often don’t conditionally find myself coming here with the query. I know a bit about finding materials on Mouser since I joined.

if you can find the right thing at Mouser you can find anything anywhere
I leaned something today , " book marks " never realized I could do that with individual posts ! that will come in handy from here on out thank you.

Hi,

I work in the telephone & AV industry, and love combining the two in novel ways. I’ve dipped my toes into sequencers & synthesizers, but I haven’t dedicated enough time learning/building/practicing to be noteworthy.

I hope to contribute my niche knowledge of communications technology to this community, and look forward to the opening of The Museum.

Greetings , have I pressed the right button ? Anyways , hello all .
Shaun here, fife , scotland. I pop up on reddit diy occassionally. Youtube channel with some diy and mediocre tunes on my 97.8 % stripboard modular synth. Started building pedals from stripboard layouts. First build ruby amp I think. 1st “synth” mfos wp20 on one off etched pcb… gave up on that method . Next mfos soundlab mk2 . A keeper !!
Next up jasper synth kit. Another keeper. And then I weighed up the options and went for stripboard modular . Some lmnc layouts , mfos and then stuff from schematics. Everything built and tuned with only an iron , multimeter and tuner. Its all fairly lo tech and budget freindly.
Still occassionly building modules and repairing gear . If you are local and are at your wits end with bust gear then message me. Serviced and repaired moog rogue juno106 mc909 mc505 fantom S and more .

Only just got around to making an account on here, so I guess I’ll introduce myself. I was a software guy for many years, but around ten years ago I started digging into electronics — some microcontroller stuff (Basic Stamp, Arduino) at first, and then more heavily into logic chips and analog.

I’ve built various noise and effect devices:

  • Arduino synths, like the Auduino, different Teensy Audio Library assemblages, and a general MIDI box based on a VS1053
  • Various APCs
  • Music from Outer Space’s Weird Sound Generator and Echo Rockit
  • a homemade spring reverb, including the tank
  • a Cracklebox/Krakadoos
  • a version of the Elektrosluch, a stereo electromagnetics-to-audio converter
  • an assortment of the Synth DIY Guy’s “Pocket Patch Pals” in-line modular synth widgets
  • and a version of the Fuzz for a Fiver (which I have housed in a plastic box and titled the “Cop Rock”, being a cheap fuzz).

(I kind of still think of myself as a beginner, but that’s really quite a bit, isn’t it?)

I’ve been working slowly on a Eurorack setup, having acquired the rails cheaply; the only two finished modules are a vactrol-controlled passive low-pass filter and a module with banana jacks on to plug a bench power supply into (until I get the proper power solution worked out), which I’ve titled the Electrical Banana. I’ve got a power supply almost ready to go, but I managed to put the 7805 in backwards, so I need to fix that. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m self-taught at guitar and keyboard, which means I’m not any good at either. Most of my musical and electronics kit is scrounged or from thrift stores and pawn shops. One of my better finds was a Vox VT20X modeling amp I bought broken for $35 and fixed with parts on hand; the previous owner had apparently had trouble with the power adapter cord coming loose, so had superglued it in place — and then stepped on it and broken it off.

Aside from various semi-toy synths, like a Gakken SX-150, a couple of Monotrons, a Kaossilator, a Pocket Miku (stylus-operated Vocaloid), and a Yamaha PSS-480 (a surprisingly powerful 2-operator FM synth with mini-keys), I’ve got a Minibrute 2S.

Next on my plate are probably some things based around the chips I just got from Electric Druid, most likely a version of the Bounce^7 and VCOs based on the VCDO and AS3340, as well as an optical tremolo built around the StompLFO. I’m also working on a lo-fi sampler based on the ISD1820 voice recorder, and converting an old PC joystick to output CVs.

Nice to meet you all!
