Inspiration / what u listening to

If you love American music, and you haven’t heard of the Coen brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, you have a treat in store. The film is a long love poem to American folk music, from gospel to bluegrass. Here’s one of the most magical scenes, where the Homeric heroes encounter a river baptism party.

This is probably my favourite river related track:

In a post on the open source 808 clone thread I mention Kingdom Come’s 1973 album Journey, the first LP to use a drum machine throughout. I gave that album a listen and there’s a lot more interesting stuff going on besides electronic drumming.

Listening!

(EDIT This gives me big prog / psyche / Kraftwerk vibe!)

I was around in 1973 and recall hearing only Spirit of Joy, the single which got decent airplay from John Peel. I was wary of Arthur Brown’s past as the guy who wore a flaming helmet on Top of the Pops (yes, if you were there you remember him declaiming “I am the god of hell fire!”) so I didn’t take Kingdom Come seriously enough to buy the album even though I found electronic music fascinating and had read an interview in which he discussed his drum machine.

Incidentally, 1973 was a good year for joy, fuel crisis notwthstanding. As well as the Kingdom Come single, the Jupiter theme from Gustav Holst’s Planets Suite was adapted by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band as a single, Joybringer.

Back when I was at looniversity I had a pretty nerdy mate who was into the demoscene.

He dug up this re-release of some tunes he’d shared with me:

That’s a studio remaster, but if you want to be blown away - you can get a copy of the original XM files.

https://files.scene.org/view/mirrors/hornet/music/disks/1998/u-symep.zip

That’s a 1.6M zip file… it contains two tracks…

I’m going to open it up and study it.

I went to see NIN last night at the Eden project. It was a very good show. The venue is amazing and the band played a lot of old songs, really heavy stuff.

For a weird moment there I parsed Renoise as the French feminine version of Renoir.

So after nearly 66 years I’ve decided I need to learn a string instrument. I chose electric bass.

I suppose if any example guided my choice to learn bass guitar, it was Chris Squire of Yes, whose sound really thrilled me in the seventies. But listening to bass players now I’m more interested in jazz stylists like Jaco Pastorius. Here he is live accompanying Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny (guitar). Coyote.

I released Blow Machine on 8 Track on my label

Cool, a good friend of mine released a few things from them here in Germany (Red Lounge Records).
I want do do a cover version of modulated/simulated with my synths but I’m struggling to understand the lyrics, last verse in particular, it’s too distorted  Can you ask Shawn for me, please?

Haha! Martin?! We’re friends on Facebook, but haven’t really talked much. I’m a huge Spits fan, and I know he’s released a few things for them. Small world!
