Still one of my favorite albums ā€œDead Cititesā€ from The Future Sound of London (1996)

I think listening to this podcast episode is mandatory. I think there’s so much going on that’s that ā€˜a-ha’ that you’d regret not giving that the opportunity to go. I gently persuade you to do it. If you don’t want to I can respect that. BOATKNIFE 8 (THE AUTECHRE EPISODE) - YouTube

pretty lame crowd though

Tim and Geoff Follin didnt have to go so hard for Plok. But holy hell.

These guys are notorious in chiptune circles. Usually for pretty bad games, but the soundtrack is always killer.

And while noisy, the results from this ZX spectrum game using some sort of damn sorcery with the 1-bit piezo speaker is nothing short of amazing.

Somewhat related to chiptune, from back in the day when I used to like checking out winners of Demoscene parties. This is what got me into trackers when I was in highschool, trying to do cheesy Metallica covers with bad guitar samples…

Strange, maybe a direct link will work. The track is Gantz Graf.

At first I thought you were playing on the video itself, I was about to agree ā€˜yeah, one of the most broken videos i’ve ever seen!’

I don’t get on with unscripted podcasts, but I did listen long enough to decide I had to give Autechre a try. I’m listening to LP5 and it’s definitely worth it. Slightly reminiscent of Egg’s Germ Patrol, for reasons I find difficult to articulate. I like the crispness of the Egg sound on that track, and I think there’s something similar here.

I just discovered, as something of a Blade Runner fan, that there exists a fairly decent anime spin-off set in 2033 on the timeline introduced in the official sequel, Blade Runner 2049. The producers seem to be using some kind of digital motion capture (or perhaps rotoscope) which gets past my aversion to jerky and low quality animation of much classic anime. The sounds are a wonderful addition to the already impressive existing Blade Runner oeuvre, and there’s a very creditable invocation of the atmosphere of the cyberpunk Los Angeles in which it is set. It’s called Blade Runner: Black Lotus and in the UK it’s currently available on the All4 app and website.

PS it’s largely an Adult Swim production so people in other countries should check their local outlets that carry their works.

Long form conversation can be difficult to get through. Despite a dense hour passing through the whole Autechre discography there was a lot I shared opinions with or gleaned deeper knowledge of music I’d been listening to for a long time. It was common knowledge to me that musician associates had been aware of Gantz Graf for longer than its public release. What kind of made sense was that Gantz Graf was made to come out right after LP5 but delayed its release while the music video was in its radically groundbreaking production. One animator made it, as he told in an interview 5% was automated tweening, 95% was made with hand operation of the software. I challenge anyone to find one piece like Gantz Graf. Gantz Graf is actually quite a smooth, elegantly thought out piece of classical synthesizer music compared to ā€œsick, filthyā€ electro and I actually can see why Gantz Graf is so much more preferable.
