Anyone here into UK Hardcore/Jungle/Early DnB? Been gassing over videos of the new Polyend Tracker and it’s proper bought me back to it all after a hiatus from that kind of thing.
Was super glad to see a video for this song finally. I know whats going to be on loop while im working for a while.
The algorithm keeps throwing me interesting curveballs. I mean, you listen to some random mostly electronic things and suddenly you end up with John Zorn’s latest?
Been trying to stick to ambient stuff whilst writing a dull report, reminded of this gem
Think I might have been too young to fully appreciate how awesome the DK Country soundtracks are when I played them!
Stickerbrush Symphony and most DKC music is a good thing to study for ambient music. Davis Wise uses a bunch of chunky chord clusters as a harmonic bead (things link Cmaj13).
This exemplifies the a characteristic of ambient; the use of harmony to create a “space” to exist in. You need smooth voice leading too.
Stickerbrush Symphony, like many DKC ambient tracks, use the same melodic line throughout, which gets re-contextualized whenever new harmonies are introduced. Even jarring intervals can sound fine when you do this since your ear gets used to the melody line.
Yeah, love those tight chord voicings! I’d love to give it a go but I’m poly-synth free at the moment. Sold my roland JV2080 pad machine in a moment of madness
I was going to post some early stuff by Parliament-Funkadelic, but I think this is my new inspiration!!
If you want, you can build up the chords one voice at a time and mix together. Its an interesting way to do it, and i did that back when i had my behringer model d. You have to really think about what intervals you want to use, and its really helpful to be able to throw midi at the synth.
I have a very vague memory of these guys. Was there some connection between them and the guys from Love and Rockets?
No, i dont think so. Some associated acts i would say are…
Faith no More:
(the one you probably know)
Mondo Cane:
Tamahawk:
Fantômas:
Peeping Tom:
Dead Cross:
Collabs with John Zorn:
Collab with The Book of Knots:
Album fav order:
Mr Bungle → California → Disco Volante
However, goodbye sober day has The Balinese Monkey Chant (Kecak) though.
Fun fact, I once played a Wizard in DnD that used to chant this way.
God, I hope so… one of these days it’s gotta be for real.
Woa, this is the first i’m hearing of the Kecak! They really pulled inspiration from some unique places
Cool to see some Balinese music/ceremonies come up here! I have family in Bali and visit quite often. The interesting thing about this chant is that whilst the chant itself is quite old, the ceremony isn’t, and was largely choreographed by a German artist called Walter Spies (a controversial figure in Bali’s history) in the 1930s. But this is one of the best/most unique things about Bali in my opinion - new ceremonies and traditions are developing all the time, it’s a living culture that’s so unique.
My fav example of this is the Ogoh-Ogoh ceremony. They build these mad fuckin effigies and march them down the streets in this big parade, then they have a knockout voting competition across the whole country to pick one winner, burn all the rest (along with pretty much everything else that day) and put the winner in a museum. People think it’s ancient but it started in the 90s - they’ve even had to reign it in because they kept making effigies of things like Hell’s Angels and western politicians, and it caused a bit of bad PR for the gov
thanks for the interesting incite on Bali . one of the best things about music forums meeting people from all over .
Pleasures mine! I don’t know much about synth DIY but if you want useless trivia, I’m your man
not that useless at least I have learned something today trivial or not , its all good .
