So, three rows or two? 8U doesn’t make sense unless you have two 1U rows since a regular row is 3U. If you use two MeanWells in that configuration, it would easily power it either way.
Depends on which Mean Welll(s) we’re talking about… From the diagram I infer it’s not RT-65B but I can’t tell which ones they are.
The power supplies in question are of the single rail RS series. You need one each of RS-X-12, RS-Y-12 and, if you require a +5V rail, one RS-Z-5. The numeric values of X, Y, and Z correspond to the power rating you want to supply to each of the three rails. The RS range covers 15W up to 150W thus: RS-15, RS-25, RS-35, RS-50, RS-75, RS-100, and RS-150.
You can derive the approximate rated current by dividing the rated voltage into the rated power. RS-15-5 will provide a rated current of 3A to a +5V rail, whereas RS-15-12 will provide 1.3A to a +12V or -12V rail.
Helpfully, they also tell you the rating. I made mine from two 8A 12V supplies.
@ChristianBloch - Yes, my case is actually 8U-ish. I am re-purposing a road case and have 3U, 1U, 3U, and a row that is the remaining space in the case which is slightly over 1U but under 2U. I’m planning to redesign some utility modules with custom panels to fit in this 1U-ish row. My actual 1U row was setup for Intellijel specs and I may pickup a couple of their modules for that row.
@Bitnik thanks for explaining that. That was really helpful. I don’t think I need a 5V rail as I don’t have any modules that use it and I can’t find any modules that I would want to buy that currently use it. I know modules like Braids used to use it but don’t any longer. I guess I could get a 5V adapter for a module if I found one that needed it?
This is the supply that I am looking at getting. I can’t take credit for any of this research. This is all @ChristianBloch. I’m copying him. I already have 2 of these in my Amazon cart but I wasn’t sure if I would need a 3rd or if 2 was fine based on the size of my case and then this other supply fell in my lap and so I wanted everyone’s opinion here on that first. Based on the responses from @fredrik and @analogoutput I am not going any further with that and copying Christian instead.
That is if someone who knows more about this than me, which is pretty much everyone, that my case would be better off with a different solution. My other concern is heat and I have thought that I may need to put a fan in the case.
I highly doubt that will be necessary.
Hey all, I found an old schematic i made a couple years for an adjustable dual bench power supply!
As is, it has the following features:
- Powered from outlet or wallwart (recommended 24v+)
- 2 independently adjustable outputs with switch to make them symmetric
- Crude short circuit protection (when it reaches the limit, it turns the output off and waits for reset pulse to turn it on again)
It was planned to be adjustable from 0-15V and -15-0V, and has been built and tested
I wanted to make a public call this weekend (a discord voice chat or stream on twitch) to brainstorm improvements for it!
Planned improvements are
- Better current control (as seen in regular bench PSUs where it limits the current to an adjustable set point). This one is already done
- Displays for voltage and current (possibly power too) outputs
- Better protection circuits for the output(if you plug in a battery in reverse polarity, for example)
- QOL and aesthetic improvements
- Better pcb layout (maybe an smd and TH variants?)
If anyone is interested lemme know!
Hi everyone! I’m searching for a 230V~ to 12V~ plug adapter since an hour and whatever I type I always get those 12V DC adaptaters… it’s like Google doesn’t understand what’s 12V ac? Omg it’s so annoying haha…
If someone has a link for a good 230V~ to 12V~ on Amazon or something it would be really sweet, I’m helping a friend with his PSU for his DIY modular
Where are you located?
I think @lu.caas is in France. I just search for AC/AC POWER
Soon as people begin to throw out old Christmas tree lights AC 12v supplies used in lights and outdoor projects turn up in the usual places (skips, bin bags and charity shops)
@analogoutput I’m in France
Funny enough, when I search AC/AC power supply I find tons of “12V DC supply for led project”… AAAAHH Amazon…
I will try to find those old adaptor for Christmas lamp
Variants that also work are AC-AC, 12VAC and AC power supply 12VAC
Thank you for helping that’s exactly it !!
Also thanks @Farabide
No, that’s the free shipping !
Dang okay, I’m silly
