Who, Where, What. the community

Oh, none taken and I agree that people do say that. Growing up in the pretty insular and homogenous culture of Denmark, then choosing to become an immigrant to the US at age 26 has given me lots of opportunities to challenge my own ignorant assumptions.

I guess over here, we are much more condensed and the difference in regional accents can change over a few miles.

It’s 6 miles to Scotland from here, prety much as soon as you get over the border there is a pronounced change. 35 miles easy you get to Hexham, and that’s where signs of the north east accent realy show. 60 miles south and Lancashire “twang” becomes apparent… and then you could travel a little further and get to a Mancunian Or Liverpudlian Accent.

There are areas in the uk that have a fairly flat, non descript accent. You would be hard placed to say where a person had come from.

Definitely not! The current British royal family have a very unique accent that is instantly recognisable and distinct from others.

I know what you mean about people who think they themselves have no accent. I once met a sloane who affected to find my accent very interesting, adding that it must be wonderful to have an accent. All this delivered in a very strong nasal accent she had probably picked up at school.

I’m sure my entire framework for understanding this issue can be teased out of this set of video clips:

I dunno, it’s fairly grim. My entire childhood was in black and white because my dad didn’t earn enough in the grime factory to pay for a colour licence. When the rent man came we used to hide behind the sofa. That was until the debt collectors came to repossess the furniture. Then we hid the sofa.

Not heard that one in a long time, was a fan of the KLF. I have a copy of the white room, probably the most valuable CD I own.

You can hear Bill Drummods scottish roots in his pronunciation of the towns ( his home town is not too far from here).

This has to be the quickest way to wind up anyone not from the home counties (basically the area around London for the americans) haha.

Obviously no one has no accent, but you can get pretty indistinct. As someone who grew up on the Dorset coast but has now lived in Manchester for 7 years with a mancunian partner and a circle of friends almost all from cumbria and the north east, I’ve developed a weird accent that all northerners identify as southern and all southerners think is northern. We’ll have to go to the third judge of the midlands!

@Caustic and @fredrik how would you guys feel about breaking the map out into another thread and locking off comments (possible?) so that it’s easier to find and doesn’t get lost in a sync/scrolling?
