Thanks, order is in with JLCPCB! I should have the extra boards up for trade sometime in December if anyone is interested.
One of my deciding factors in switching from Arduino ide to using the PlatformIO extension on VSC is the ability to manage and swap out versions of hardware. Stm32 is just one of the many platforms supported.
I managed to get my hands on a #2000 MegaDrone panel set, and as it’s the first time building my own synthesizer, I decided to build a little box for it, along with some other modules to make it somewhat “““useful””” (at least as useful as a box of bees can be
)
The switch panel replaces the capacitors on the board, so you can select whether you want “high” or “low” pitch (2.2uF/10uF for the top row, 10uF/22uF for the bottom).
The ADSR and VCA are internally wired, so you can twiddle the knobs and push the button and it just does stuff. It even has a fun little speaker built in!
how are people still finding these boards?
What a neat mod. Thanks for sharing.
What a splendid build! A great drone set with just enough onboard functions to allow for hours of expressive music making.
And remember as in life, synth DIY and music; Never underestimate the utility of a box of bees.
I decided to implement the Erica Synths FM Drum Synthesizer with some (small) extensions. The Carrier CV nonreturn diode can be bridged to add some distortion (frontpanel element “TRASH - OFF - METAL”), and I added a Gate LED.
My YouTube example shows some first primitive integration tests. The Cymbal sounds a bit harshly due to the 4 diode ringmodulator.
New 3d printed case I designed and finished a couple months back, still have 3 modules that need soldering.. but here it is! I will eventually throw up some files if you guys wanna use or modify it, currently working on a smaller version of a case for my 2221 voice module
I think this is a priority statement concerning keyboard synthi vs. modular ![]()
Seriously though. Where can we find these? They look great!

Or maybe Thonk sell very very very tiny knobs so we can make our own.
For the same effect take the real synths and gaze at them from far far away.
A quick gaze across the workshop floor…..
A full programmable Trilogy
Two home made Oscars
An AX-80 rack mount
My own design 8 voice poly
The Arp Quadra VST
The Elka Synthex VST
The Memory Moog VST
The bones of the Super JX-10 build
An empty DW6000 shell.
This is jawdroping!
Do you embed a whole PC in the chassis to run the VST?
And may I ask where do you get the keybeds from? ![]()
Is the black one standing upright your own poly design? ![]()
Hi yes, I use USFF HP series PCs in each case, out put is a DAC and a usb midi interface. Running a delbloated windows 11.
The cases are all CME UF-70 chassis, I strip out all the pots and sliders etc and just leave the midi board, they have a lot of useful connections, usb, midi out a second midi out internally, 2 assignable foot pedal sockets, breath control input and velocity and aftertouch. I connect the keyboard over usb to the Teensy 4.2 usbHost port.
The black synth is my own design, 8 voice bi-timbral poly with 10 screens to show parameters etc. it’s black because I used the classic 2 chassis, the classic are silver unfortunately.
Great stuff!
What a nice concept with the individual screens for each function.
I was once looking for some cheap keyboard candidates with aftertouch to get the keybed from to build a controller for my modular, and also for a future analog poly design. I had not get across this CME UF range.
Anyway, my first modular case is still only 50% full. The keyboard projects will need to wait a few more years ![]()
I built a CV controller for my modular, it was a cheap 4 octave midi keyboard with velocity and I added an aftertouch strip as well.
It is polyphonic with upto 6 CV, gates, triggers and velocity output, plus the mod depth and pitch bend, you can configure it for mono or unison too with note priority.
The multi screen setup is so cool!
My next PCB project is done:
remember these?
I refactored them as PCB with pannels for KOSMO & Eurorack
- The functional PCB is shared by both front pannels
- There is a battery connector for KOSMO sized modules
- On Eurorack the power connection is made directy tith pins (NICE!)
- The modules can share power (3:1) to save some components and prescious power bus connections
- The modules can be Linked inside the case for cleaner setups. The internal link is switchable
if there is interrest i’ll share the gerbers…
EDIT: gerber files linked
