I love that filter. It sounds awesome. No wonder YuSynth put it in the Arturia synths. Where did you get the 2 pole 4 way switch from? I need one, I’m working on a Gristleizer.
Yes awsome ! my best filter (…for the moment)
For the 2 pole 4 way switch i’ve bought it at Tayda
Ah cool! Thanks for that! Gees they’re so cheap too. I’ll order a stack of them
I think it is quite handsome!
Thanks! Came out allright in the end, but compared to pcb mounting its just so much more tedious and fragile
Bless Ray Wilson, but man, I’d go nuts with front panels that crowded.
Part of the reason I made a quarter of his quad DC mixer into a 75 mm module on its own.
Doesn’t look like much, but I soldered everything is could on the new boards. Now time to wait as I replenish the synth funds to order the rest of the components.
Also picked up a Volca Beats today in trade for a guitar pedal! Really happy about that - not having drums has been a downer. I’ll probably crack it open and do the snare mod on it tomorrow morning, and long term I’ll probably end up doing the individual drums out. As I start to build out my rack, I figure there should be a relatively simple diyable module where I could take an audio signal in and spit out a trigger? Haven’t looked into it, but if envelope followers can split out a gate it should be doable. That way I can still use it as a sequencer later on.
Also, picking up a power supply tomorrow! Found a good deal on a meanwell with a bus board and rack switch. Was holding out to buy a Trogotronic, but the deal was too good to pass up. Should be enough for a while - at least I’ll be able to power everything on the rack and keep building new stuff instead of only having half the rig running at a time.
And finally, looks like I’m getting a Teac four track tape recorder! Not entirely sure details, I got a text from a friend of my dad’s / old bandmate. It’s from the first studio they made together and has been sitting in his basement for the last 30-some years and he asked if I wanted it. Apparently it’s in good condition but he hasn’t fired it up for a while, so I’m expecting it’ll need some love. Really hoping it’s a three head, I’d love to run it as an echo. If not, or if it’ll cost too much to get on its feet then it’ll likely just sit on my desk as a bit of family music history.
All in all, shaping up to be a good weekend!
Well that went quicker than expected.
Just finished up the snare mod on the Beats. For those unfamiliar, the snare on Beats is pretty poopy sounding. Theres an unpopulated capacitor on the board and people found popping a 100nf capacitor in there makes it sound much better. Multiple people also say one of these large ones is better than small. Didn’t want to fuck around resoldering to those tiny pads so I just took their word for it, fortunately I had one kicking about. You can see there that I’m an idiot and partially melted the one knob with my soldering iron.

Pictures two and three show the future individual output mods. Just gotta find some jacks that fit between the two PCBs there, drill out the case, then wire them to the spots on the top PCB. Easy as yes please! Looks to me like Thonkiconns will fit sideways, but I didn’t check as I’m not doing it now anyway.
I didn’t look at those photos after taking them - sorry about the blurriness, but I dont want to crack it all open right now, so if you can’t tell, the solder points on the PCB for outputs are big and nicely labeled
I had a couple of frequency central power buses stop working. (I think it was the my safety valves. The trouble started when I added them)
Anyway, I poked around with a multimeter and discovered the power buses were fine but I had blown a tiny fuse inside the transformers. And I really hated to throw them out they were 10 bucks a pop.
So I added an external fuse box.
You ever notice how, when you take a day to try and square away little things that aren’t working and aren’t done, it’s usually 2 failures for everything one success?
And it’s so important too; because whenever band mates come over, they go straight for the module that isn’t working, “hey what’s this one do?”
“Right now nothing buddy. Not one damn thing.”
So you bridged the power lines of the chip with a 1 kV cap. You evidently like large margins…
Not sure what you mean
Oh, the capacitor is made for use with 1000 Volts (at max.), and it is a bit funny to see that used in combination with a IC which is used for low voltages only. It is fine to use it, but you do not often see this, most times you would see a low voltage capacitor in such a use case.
Ah yeah. I thought it was silly, but found multiple people claiming they sounded better than the small ones.
In the past I have done a bunch of a/b-ing of capacitor types - small ceramic disk vs oil in paper, and to my ear they always sounded the same. This was done on an electric guitar though so maybe not directly transferrable, but unless polarized I’m inclined to believe a cap is a cap. Still, the thought of trying to desolder one of these without messing up the SMD components around it… I’d rather just take other people’s word for it and not need about.
Finally finished a BMC percussive voice with 2x analog drum, 2x decaying analog noise and 2x FM drum. I’ll try to record a little jam with them tomorrow, before taking the whole synth apart and revising the PSU!
I have one of BMC’s analog drums , I like it . I was looking at yours wondering what you did to it so many extra knobs , then I noticed the x2 .
(:
Didn’t do much modding on these, save for the push button trigger on all of them
