Mail Day Thread

You’re going to love the Rigol. I picked one up for my birthday 2 years ago and still haven’t scratched the surface of what it can do.

Neat thing is you don’t even have to hack them anymore unless you want to enable the 100mhz bandwidth option - all the decoders now come enabled out of the box. Those have saved me a lot of headaches debugging connection issues between various things!

The FFT feature is kind of fun too…a little slow…but better than nothing and very handy when you want to look at the frequency domain instead of time domain.

But just having all of the digital measurement options and built in frequency counter mean I use it so much more than my old analog tektronics scopes. (not to mention it actually fits on my desk while the tek’s are almost the size of a roll on suitcase and twice as heavy!)

Even after two years I’m still overwhelmed with the Rigol and just scratching the surface of it’s abilities.

All part of the vinyl exp- oh wait, no. That’s a real shame. One thing I can’t argue with is the aesthetics of the 12" disc. Hopefully they’ll send you a replacement.

I’m new to Europe, what the hell is all of this “resolving clearance delays” business? “Importer must provide the required registration/ identification number” - register some knobs? What the hell is all this?

Are the options (Trigger, Decoder, Mem-Depth, Recorder) described somewhere in the manuals? It’s not obvious to me they are and they’re not much good if I have no idea what they do or how to use thm.

Sadly the manuals are pretty much useless in my experience :frowning:

But…it’s such a popular scope with hobbyists there are tons of videos and forums with details on how to use everything I’ve had a question about so far. I go back and watch some of the review vids like EEVblog’s from time to time to remind of things it’s capable of.

Oh, and don’t even bother trying to install Rigols desktop software (I don’t think it supports Linux anyway) it’s pretty much useless with this scope and is huge. But you can just shove a USB stick in the port on the front and hit the green print button to get a screen capture pretty much anytime.

Judging from a quick googling, “Importer must provide” sounds like a US customs and/or Fedex thing.

Yikes, his features review video is 80 minutes long. And then there’s the review summary, teardown, jitter problem… See you guys next week sometime.

dam nice , you getting serious about this designing ? have liked your offerings so far !

I’m not serious about much of anything… and this thing has way more capability than I’ll ever probably use, but that’s okay. Always wanted a good scope.

just having fun thats good and the scope should make trouble shooting less of a chore .

This is what I got:

For audio frequencies it’s fine.

I just use a 1/4" to 1/8" cord. The ground clamp on the Rigol probe grabs the ring no problem and the hook on the probe grabs the thin part of the tip. It’s not the most elegant solution…but…“it’s only audio”

Or stick a jack on a 1/4" cord, and clip onto the sleeve and tip terminals.

I don’t have any 1/4" cords long enough to reach from my synth to my scope

Ok…I do have one…but that’s the one I use to to my amp and it’s a bit harder to dig out from the other wires piled on top of it.

But I did do that with my multimeter to get readings off the CV outputs when I was tuning in my sequencers CV generator.

I got the version that unplugs and has a handle on the top.

Received my second JLCPCB order today. Had to fix the Clouds Fup I did by not checking the text before I sent it to be fabricated. I wasn’t sure how they would turn out if I tried putting the copper as a “background color” with the white silkscreen on top. I think it would be okay to do for larger icons and/or larger text than some of the labels on Clouds. I really needed to get a panel for one of the clouds modules I built so I could finally send it to someone as a thank you gift. That’s why there are two versions of the clouds panels. One with the white text and one without.

The other is the Peaks panel I designed, which again…has the white text but if I were to make more of these I would make a few adjustments. Anyway…on to the next set of panels I need to design which should be Elements, Ripples, and Tides for the next order.

These look really nice! Will you make the designs available to the masses?

Thank you. That’s kind of you to say.

Initially the plan was to design and print the panels that I needed for the modules that I have / will build and then sell off the extras for a reasonable price to help compensate for the cost. This way I am essentially getting “free” panels instead of paying $20 - $40 each.

I’m not sure how much interest people would have for them? I guess if I sell the extras quickly then I might make more. Do you think people would be interested in these? I’m not 100% happy with them and that’s probably why I am debating it.
