Introductions: Say hello, tell us about yourself and your projects

Welcome! What’s in the tape?

Hello everybody. Im mostly a lurker on forum sites but I’ve been looking into getting into DIY synths for awhile now and this has been a pretty good place for information. Not much to say about myself other than I work with computers mostly and have a few hobbies that I do. I recently built the super simple oscillator and am looking to build a diy synth. Hopefully i’ll learn quite a bit about synths here and will maybe pickup a few idea’s and get some input from everyone!

My first attempt at making hardware lol

Welcome! Definitely found the right place for ideas, support and encouragement.

I have to say your oscillator looks great! (A lot neater than my fist.)

Keep going and have fun.

Welcome! I’m really interested in how you designed the modules using tubes as a basic building block. I know I speak for more people on this forum when I invite you to open a thread and maybe shed some light on that?

Hello!
My name is Anders and I live in southern Sweden. I guess you could call me an electronics hobbyist or something.
I’ve been building things and playing around with electronic components and Arduinos for a few years
but I’ve never bothered to go very deep into it. it’s just for fun. When I was a teenager I used to make very simple sample-based music using software like Sonic Foundry Acid and I’ve always liked playing around with music.

At some point I ran across someone who made an Atari Punk console + sequencer combo with a Johnson decade counter and a couple of 555s. I happened to have that stuff at home so I built one myself. In the process of building it I think I found LMNC and his DIY synth videos inspired me to build my own DIY modular:

.

I started the project with little to no understanding of how a modular synthesizer works, so it is all very non-standard. The Form factor of the panels is 15cm by 10cm or multiples of that width.
It’s pretty much a bunch of Arduinos in a box .
It’s actually all powered by a USB hub!

The sequencer is an Arduino I coded myself, the oscillators are Arduinos using the Mozzy library, the LFO is an Arduino I coded myself and the ADSR is as well. I also have a PT2399 delay in there and now since the last picture was taken I have also added a multi-effect based on a chip called the Electrosmith Daisy.
The Daisy is right now coded to be a:

  • State variable filter, switchable between HP, LP and BP
  • VCA
  • Switchable effect (right now a Fold filter and a bitcrush)
  • and finally a reverb

I am currently working on a USB MIDI to CV thing based on the Arduino Pro micro. It works fine if I want to play the synth using midi sequencing software, but not if I want to use a keyboard.
I also have an arpeggiator, a multi-delay box, and a couple of other things planned.

If anyone wants to see more of the modular and other stuff I’ve built you can see some of it on my (infrequently used) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anders.b.dahlqvist/

I know, right?
We saw them first when we went to a music festival in Prague on a whim.
Liked them so much we went to another music festival that summer because
they were playing there
I’ve seen some remixes and stuff from them but not much else.

Hi! I’m Fraser, I’m a Canadian uni student who plays bass clarinet and solders around with synthy stuff a bunch in my spare time.

I’m just starting to make an LMNC style breakout knob machine for a genMDM to become the bass-mothership to my tiny eurorack drum setup, so I figured this is probably a good place to be.

Aanyways once live music’s a thing again, I think I’ll probably try my hand at becoming a solo artist with live looping and maybe singing - which basically means I’ve been watching videos of Sam commanding a stage for the last few weeks on loop to try to decipher his dark secrets (sidenote: if any of you know the demon he sold his soul to in exchange for synth-prowess, hmu!)

Hope y’all are having a beautiful Tuesday!

Excellent! I have a bass clarinet over there (gestures to storage area about 3 meters away) but haven’t had it out in ages.

I did post the link recently to this video of a PVC contrabass chalumeau I built:

hi everyone, my name is Andreas a 49 year young Audio Engineer, based in Hamburg Germany and founder of Patternwirtschaft… a 4 head techno Band. We using only machines to make music and decided to built an analog synth in kosmo format for our shows in future… so it will begin soon… recently we found out that the tunable VCO DIY Kit is sold out. We need 3 Oscillators for the project so SAM please let us know when the VCO’s are available again… THX
best Andreas

Welcome, if you are in a hurry, you can also make it very quickly on a stripboard.

I know… but we start in future so there are many other modules to to built before and the PCB Boards are more reliable on tour…!!

But at least one VCO is nice to have to test the rest of the modules while waiting for Sam to restock…
So a temporary stripboard one is nice to have, even if you just leave it without a proper panel…
That is, unless you already have a signal generator.
Another option is a Braids…

And yeah, another Kosmo on tour… cool

for sure eric… we are now part of the Kosmo stage family… for us the best format and we love BIG Knobs

If you’re in a hurry and need some VCO’s quick but don’t want to go the stripboard route you can always etch up your own boards: My first DIY modules - starting a Kosmo format build

That’s a Basic 3340 I did last week. The files for my PCB layout are in my GIT: https://github.com/jhitesma/Modular-Synth-Build/tree/main/cem3340 If you didn’t want to etch your own you could always send the gerbers off to JLCPCB and get 5 made up for $2 then pay for quick shipping. Not sure what the shipping cost is to Germany but for me here in the US it’s like $15 for 2-4 day DHL. express. So <$20 for 5 boards delivered in a few days. They aren’t as full featured as the 1222 but sound the same as long as you don’t need FM/Sync or the built in tuner.
