This article notes Behringer guitar pedals are now $19 each at Sweetwater (after a recent deal made between Music Tribe and Sweetwater):
It being “guitar.com” they not unsurprisingly don’t say anything about synths, but there are a number of Behringer synths currently sporting a “Price Drop” sticker. I’m not sure how recent these drops are or how much of a drop they are. Behringer Keyboards & Synthesizers | Sweetwater
I would really like a drum machine but my budget is kind of tight. I know korg volca’s are nice too but i really like the individual outputs that the behringer has
This is actually very sloppy coverage, in that the photo they use of the Swing is of the prototype; the version that came to market rearranges some of the controls so it looks less like the KeyStep. And more like the SWIDI, which copies it extremely closely:
(Note the SWIDI has no output ports, just wireless MIDI. So no CV outputs, unlike the KeyStep and Swing.)
Added: On closer examination, I think the SWIDI photo is really a photoshop of the Swing photo. Notice the “reflection” on the bottom is exactly like that in the Swing picture. Also notice there are two protrusions on the back panel for both, corresponding I think to the power jack and foot switch jack on the Swing. But the SWIDI has no such protrusions; here’s a picture from their site:
So is this thing really just a hoax? It’s more than a week early for April Fool’s. But the copy on the page looks serious (aside from obvious digs at Behringer) and states a May 2 release date and a price, which seems to place it in the realm of reality. I dunno.
Added: OK, clearly that back panel photo is also a photoshop of Behringer’s Swing back panel photo:
Here’s my guess: It’s in part an April Fool’s joke, but not a complete hoax. It’s a publicity stunt in support of an actual product. They’ll release a new keyboard on May 2, it’ll have the stated specs, and it’ll cost $79 (or at least that’s the plan), but “inspired by Behringer” and its backtracking on the Swing design, it won’t look like the Swing. And it’ll get tons of coverage.
What I get from this is that somebody is pretty serious about wireless connectivity. Hanging their advertising copy on an ongoing joke about Behringer probably gives them a lot more coverage, I’m sad to say, than what appears to me to be truly innovative use of Bluetooth and wireless charging technology.
Also, wireless charging… I don’t get it. You still have to plug in the (proprietary) charging dock and have it touching the device. It’s just a fancy less efficient power socket. It’s not wireless at all.
The renders look somewhat less Swing-like, and they do say " Target retail price is US$ 79". But
This is a crowd creation process. You are part of the development. You decide what specifications and features can be added to the final version of SWIDI.
It is your turn now!
…
Do you want CV/gate or USB ports? Do you need polyAT? Do you require battery power or wireless charging? Do you prefer wired or wireless?
… so this thing is kilometers away from even being vaporware. I have a feeling that May 2 date (no longer mentioned on the joke page) is inoperative, unless maybe it’s May 2, 2023. Or 2024. And how they’re setting a target price without even knowing the basic feature set I don’t know.
I have a feeling they’ve got a design for an ultra cheap MIDI controller almost ready to go and they’re just trying to get people to sign up to their mailing list.
I think that’s the most likely explanation. One possibility that seems to fit is that the R&D people are seeking market intelligence, in the absence of a proper marketing strategy. This would be a quick and dirty fix in response to a perceived impedance mismatch (ie: they’re either not selling enough units or they’re experiencing unexpected demand for certain products and they’re not sure why this is happening.)
The bodge wiring is strong on this one. I couldn’t get a nice picture but look at the 8pin ic. Two of the legs are lifted and have wires soldered to them.
It’s original because there are no plated pads under the pins.
