Soundtronic MIDI Ultimate Synth

Some examples of the first grunts of the Monster Synth From Hell:

Random noice with VCOs fed from S&H

CV from a simple 8-step sequencer and knob settings all over the place

Before packing things down where ever I can find space to do so, I will install a transformer inside the Ultimate. The IEC-connector/fuze/switch assy in place and just need to screw the tranny in place as well as the psu and solder some few wires.

Mrs K is coming home in two weeks time and I have manage to “decorate” our apt with various projects, making impossible for two persons have breakfast or spend an evening in front of the telly.
However the soldering iron and tools will be available as will the modules for the modular so I can fiddle and perhaps get some ready and running.

Hi @Soundbrigade , I made a note when you started this project as it looks ideal for a teenager I’m mentoring. Can I ask some questions?
Is the MIDI Ultimate as straightforward as it looks?
Are the instructions/schematics readily available or do you have to dig about the magazine archive?
Lastly can it be purchased as an complete kit or do you have to collect all the module parts and panels in Soundtronics basket?

Any and all info would be great

Just noticed it’s discontinued. Does anyone have a link to something similar?

It is based on Ray Wilson’äs (MFOS) Ultimate (plus maybe Ultimate Expander).

I still have to trim the VCOs, VCF and set up the VCA … and check the MIDI I/F …

Missed your questions. As you noticed, the synthesizer is discontinued and just like that I cannot come up with any alternatives, but maybe Elby-Design has something (WASP), there are some kits using Teensy (https://electrotechnique.cc/TSynth).
The sad fact is the the Ultimate came perfectly packed with a huge PCB and bags for each individual module. However, the build and trim guides came from a magazine (that has to be paid for), but else, a perfect kit.

Ah the bittersweet realisation i may have to do it myself! Or maybe…

@lookmumnocomputer Sam, wouldn’t a single board midi project synth like this make a great addition to the world? I loved the projects in the early zines and something like this synth would be a hit series.

@AdamskiA ? anyone else? A good idea?

Thanks for the reply

Maybe, but realistically your teenager might not be a teenager by the time it came out!

The MFOS Sound Lab Ultimate apparently is still available from MFOS/SynthCube:

A fair and reasonable point. Damn. Many thanks.

This is nothing that solves your problem but I have a few (or two) boards for the Transcendent T2000 synthesizer.
It is made by me and I did a few changes (switches) and made the board slightly shorter (500mm). Components should be pretty easy to find, but all info only in magasine ETI (copies all over the www).
Besides I have checked the disgn a zillion times (=4 times) but there can still be errors (I did find one).
I can send a pcb.

Cheers. I liked the transcendent. I rebuilt a jen sx1000 in the 80’s and made so many mods it was the most unreliable kit in the band.
Its a 14 year old genius im buying a kit for so let me talk to him next week. I’ll PM you. Thanks again.

Another even greater idea for a teenager is to look for cheaper DIY modules. Two VCO’s, a VCF, a VCA or two a few ADSRs and LFOs, a mixer and noise/S&H and you have a complete little modular machine.
Throw in a MIDI2VC (I bought a small and cheap unit from Think).

Erica and a bunch of others are selling kits thru Thonk, SynthCube etc.

PS. I am looking at Ladik’s take on the Turing Machine: Composer
