Loved the books. Especially on audio where the guy who plays rimmer (Chris Barrie?) Does all the voices. He’s a very talented mimick.

I found “Primordial Soup” in the loft the other day.

Up until 6 years ago I had read ~8 books in my 40 years ( then ) and the majority had been the entire dwar collectio…

6 years ago I chnaged jobs and started reading books at lunch, a bit of Jules Vern, Stephen King, Hunger Games… An a lot of other Post Apocalyptic stuff, which is the stuff I was into… Getting a little real…

Bring on the DWARF… SMAKIBBFB

I need to bring this show again. In fact until recently I didn’t know their comeback lasted more than that like two episode special. To find out there were several new seasons blew my socks off. Watching this shit on local public television was my childhood man.

its been my life for 25+ years… we had the wobbly years… but staggeringly on balance its one of the most successful sit coms of all time … the BBC should never have let it go, But it may have made the new Chanel “DAVE” the money it needed…

Yeah, somehow I was reading the books before they made it to public TV in Iowa too. The TV version was even better than my imagination somehow. I thought I was reading a bad Douglas Adams knockoff, not a “literary adaptation” of what turned out to be a brilliant sitcom.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams also originated in broadcast scripts, albeit for radio rather than television.

Made it to ~0:55, then I got annoyed by the laugh track

(I don’t remember being annoyed by Red Dwarf. Have they always used a laugh track? Maybe I’ve gotten old.)

I dialled out the canned laughter… IIRC some of teh early ones were filmed before a live audince but as is common they put on canned laughter. Not sure what they did when they re-mastered the originals…

I was listening to that clip, and I could swear that there’s a bit of classic Korg being used ( M1 sounding )…

They have always had a laugh track. We kinda dont have that in shows anymore so i think there is a disconnect nowadays.

Technically it isn’t canned laughter. They usually perform the show in front of a live audience (though there may also be segments filmed on location.) There are exceptions. Series 7, following the departure of actor Chris Barrie (Rimmer) and co-writer Doug Naylor (correction: Rob Grant left, Naylor stayed), had no audience and therefore no laughter. Back to Earth, the reboot, was made as a film without a live audience. Mostly what you hear, though, is actual people laughing because they’re enjoying themselves watching Red Dwarf being filmed.

That’s five minutes of really obvious laughs. Laser pointers, cat flaps, spaceship formations that coincidentally look like a cute pussy cat face.

Enough to make fans want to tune in, perhaps. I hope we get more than that. I’ve been impressed before.

(Did a bit of googling and learned that this is a highly controversial topic among hardcore fans, so please ignore my comment.)

(Some of the flame wars debates I found were pretty funny, though )

as i said… you have to dial it out

Some of the mid serise (7-8) petty humour may still be there, which I pushed through… The last two proper series were very good. Back to earth I did not gel with…

It’s all he tiny nuisances that were there in the early days, that got lost a little in the middle, that returned in later episods… that’s what makes it great IMO… The Bio Printer miss feed still has me spitting wine across the room as only an IT Support professional can undestand…
