Sometimes I am really puzzled to see what people are willing to pay for some stuff. I mean, the bids on that studio sign…
I’ve been away from the game and the public internet for a little while but I’m still around doing stuff here and here, though busy with other stuff. These bad boys arrived today. Fits in 4 hp, 4 layers inside. Those esp32-c3 boards are cheap as hell and powerful. No firmware yet, planning for PDM output through an active filter, and there’s no control panel yet, just pins so i can build something around it later.
I asked them to mount the diodes the wrong way around, that was like 8 days ago, since then i replaced like trillions cells in my body, i don’t know the idiot who placed that order.

im considering ordering some SMT PCBAs cus I lack the precision for surface mount soldering
I’ve experimented with hot plate soldering recently and if you only have a single-sided board it works VERY well. Even moreso if you’ve got a stencil (but it’s not required)

A WEM Copicat from the 1970s.
The eBay listing warned that the motor was disconnected inside, so first test used my tape recorder as a tow-truck to pull 1/4" tape across the heads. Everything worked and motor now back in service.
It sounds enormous.
Arrived with a home-made replacement tension arm but no other modifications. Yet.

I remember the guitarist in a band I was in over 40 years ago used a WEM copycat, Great for shadows covers.

Can I suggest sticking a wind up metronome on top of the far end of the tension arm. As the weight swings you get a weird LFO type effect. (Note: only do this with your own gear as some engineers might get seriously upset and violent… I’m told)

I’ve just tried this with a little Wittner metronome blu-tacked onto the arm but heard no audible effect. Perhaps my tape tension is set heavier than the original red plastic arm.
But you’ve got me thinking about mechanical envelope generation, CV to a solenoid to wiggle the arm?
… And my work is done.
I had a large heavy 1960’s metronome and yes, blutac with possibly some on the movable weight too and the tension arm wabled (again, I’m told. I’ve never experimented with another studio’s gear and there’s no-one alive can prove I ever did. It wasny me. Big boys did it and ran away..)

I do wonder what else you could control with the dia-pilot output rather than just a projector, and just how fast a signal it can spit out. Trigger a sample, a sequence run, or maybe even change something external (eg: step thru a bunch of preset speed settings for a Leslie speaker motor, etc).
