Just a reminder folks, this person is looking to get into diy synth building, not buy an already working on.
Make an Atari punk console to get started. You can get something buzzing, it’s not much of an investment, powers easily, and it’s a good way to see if this is right for you.
Then build a fc power supply like a microbus. You are going to need power.
Then build Sam’s modules. Start with a vco.
If you want, and think you are up to it, you can also choose to build ‘stripboard’ versions.
All of these topics are searchable in the forum. We have also put together BOM for them, which show you where you can source the parts for the cheap.
Sam usually makes video builds for his modules, so you can watch him do it if you are timid!
It’s all good. It’s really good advice and taught me a bit more about what my goals are with this project. I’m most likely going to buy a working semi-modular synth to expand upon over DIY. It would be a bit boring to just own a few VCOs and filters not to have anything reliably to mix around with.
I raised the suggestion of getting a semi modular synth as a way to jump start getting into DIY: it means you have something to use your first DIY module with, instead of having to build five modules before you can do much of anything with them.
Definitely this. I built Sam’s MS-20 filter as the first thing and really had very little to use it with. A filter can kinda work with anything, though. I don’t use my Neutron that much these days, but mostly because I forget about it and having it while building my first modules was absolutely instrumental in keeping the interest going.
