Free Faust DSP online workshop, Friday 10 April, 2020

Faust is a highly portable realtime digital signal processing (DSP) language that runs on many platforms. Here’s an email that was posted to the Faust users mailing list the other day. Please note that all times are in Central European Time, which is currently 2 hours ahead of UTC.

Hi everyone,

Workshop: Faust For the Confined

Whether we are in Europe, America, Asia, etc. most of us are currently stuck at home for a while. As boredom slowly becomes part of our lives (or not haha), don’t you think that this is just THE BEST time to finally … learn Faust (https://faust.grame.fr)?!

In this context, GRAME-CNCM is happy to offer a free online half day workshop on Faust on Friday April 10, 2020 starting at 3pm (GMT+2). This workshop will be structured in 2 sessions:

3:00 - 4:30pm: Faust 101 – Intro to Faust with Yann Orlarey

5:00 - 7:00pm: Audio Plugin Design With Faust and JUCE with Romain Michon

To sign up to this workshop, please fill up this form: https://forms.gle/D7Ga9GYBpeYRRSKb8

The workshop will happen through Google Hangout/Meet and we’ll send you a URL with some instructions on April 9.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

We look forward to see you online!

Cheers,

The Faust Team

Is any hardware required?

I don’t think it needs any particular hardware. You can install Faust on just about anything. It even runs in a web browser.

I received this update as a registered participant. Note the browser recommendations.

Hi,

Thanks for signing up to the “Faust for the Confined” Workshop! This message provides additional information for tomorrow’s event.

Where and How to Meet?

We’ll be using Google Hangout/Meet. The meetings can be accessed through a URL or by phone – links are provided below.

We expect A LOT of participants (we currently have 208 people signed up). Hence, to ensure the best experience for everyone, we kindly ask you to deactivate your microphone throughout the whole workshop. If you have questions, please ask them in the chat of the Google Hangout/Meet. Members of the Faust team will be monitoring them and will do their best to answer them.

One more thing: it would make our life much simpler if you could access the meeting using a Google account . Indeed, users without a Google account must be explicitly approved by the owner of the meeting. Since there will be a lot of people, we don’t want to have to do that in real-time for everyone.

For this workshop, we will get our hands dirty and use the Faust compiler to generate C++ DSP objects to integrate them in a JUCE audio plug-in. We expect participants of this workshop to have a basic understanding of C++ and to be able to use a terminal. In preparation for the workshop, we need you to install the following elements on your system:

Special note to Windows users: Installing the Faust compiler on Windows can be a tedious process. Hence, we recommend you to skip that step. Most of the workshop will be taught using the Faust online IDE (https://faustide.grame.fr) which doesn’t require to install the Faust compiler.

The handout of this workshop can be found here: https://faustdoc.grame.fr/workshops/2020-04-10-faust-juce/

Feel free to ask if you have any question!

Cheers,

The Faust Team

I missed it :frowning: Is there any recording?

It seems to have just vanished into the aether. I wish I’d made my own recording, now. I was rather too busy that day to pay much attention.
