DIY Spring Reverb Module

Hello Guys, I’ve built a Spring Reverb Module for Eurorack. I followed some schematics I found online, mostly for the driver of the coil, but also added Low and High pass filter (simple RC buffered filters), feedback and distortion. I really liked how the distortion worked, as it is a soft clipping type, and it acts a bit like compressor, it icreases the loudness. Then I found that there is kind of a bad flaw, that I am not buffering the input, which creates an unwanted second feedback path. So I created a version without this distortion. Here is a vide:

Great work indeed !!
I was wondering if the spring has to be a special one (especially for music and sound I mean) or if any spring would work ? I am thinking that the sound quality would maybe not be as good but i cant see why it wouldn’t work

Well the reverb tank is a unit that comes with springs, I haven’t mounted them myself. But I’ve seen a video by one guy who build a spring reverb from scrap parts. I don’t think there’s something very special about the spring. The greater trouble are the pickups, they are like guitar pickups but bigger, I don’t know exactly how they function. But prebuild reverbtanks are commmon, you can find one on ebay for 10-20 dollars second hand. Now you have to adjust the resistor values for the driver for the different coils you use though

Even new reverb tanks are available for under $30, if you aren’t inclined to buy used

If you’re building Kosmo, Sam says he’s got a spring reverb module in the works

Thanks both for the reply.
I am not sure if i will ever build one but for me there is something quite fascinating around this reverb effect, probably coming to the very mechanical aspect of it.

The reverb tanks also turn up in old amps, organs and eBay.

I am going for the newer solid state types, but a real spring reverb tank had been really cool. They aren’t that expensive either.
Some of the old DIY synths described in various magazines had this kind of echo units.

However can you use a SPRING reverb after May 31st???

You can try but it probably not going to work. Same like the plate reverb only works when you have lunch. That’s why people switched to chips…
edit:
It MAY or MAY not work

Here’s a schematic of the Doepfer spring reverb module, if anyone’s collecting ideas:

Spooky! I moved house this year and today i found my box of salvaged reverb tanks, (in the kitchen under the sink. obviously) and then you post this. Many thanks!

Unfortunately, in many countries, reverb tanks do not come up often in the ads for second-hand instruments, and when they do they are listed for as much as new (if not more). Buying of ebay is not an option either as the postage will easily double or triple the listed price. :man_shrugging: I do look for them nevertheless!

The mechanics of a spring tank are straightforward and a fun build. I had one made from a small display coffin I found at a car boot sale.
