Starting SMD soldering

About to attempt some SMD soldering. Any recommendations on a good tip for my soldering iron?

I wasn’t brave enough to try SMDs with my iron and went straight to hot air after some recommendations from friends in the know. Have you considered that option?

I have. I am also considering the paste & cook method.

The hot air station seems like a bit of an extravagance for something I don’t plan on using terribly often.

I hear you, I felt the same way. I picked up a cheap-ish one (70€), and watching components pulled into place by the surface tension magic in the solder paste when it hits the right temperature was worth it.

I saw this video the other day:

But I have no experience with that, yet.

Hmmm reminds me of the psp led mods I used to do. Bloody tiny things.

Just tin one pad and line that up, nice n flush.
Then use some flux and rake over the rest of the pads.
Or use stencils and paste =)

Good luck =D
