Laptop charger psu?

Hello,

So I’m about to build my first case and had some questions around options for power supplies. The case is gonna be 6u 104hp and the case will be stackable for future expansion. When I put my modules on modular grid I got 2.5a for my +12v and 1111 on -12v. When I was looking at trogotronic power supplies I noticed that a laptop charger style power supply was between the entry part and the bus board. Since it seems like all of the power is coming from the laptop style charger. Could you just have a simple dc barrel style entry to the bus board and have all that power happen outside the case?

No, you would need something to convert to +/- 12V before you hit the bus board.

I added a pic for reference to see what I mean

It’s not a laptop charger. Similar connector maybe, but different output.

The key there is that there are two supplies. Laptop chargers will work, if you have two and they’re connected right, though I would add some extra filtering if the bus board doesn’t have it.

There is a single regulator on the busboards, probably to get 5V.
So these supplies must be 12V.
Laptop chargers are usually 18 to 20V
But you can add 12V regulators between them and the busboard, or use a busboard with integrated regulators.

But he still won’t have a -12V rail, unless he adds an inverting DC/DC converter, or another laptop power supply.

Yes, two chargers, two regulators. (That’s why I used the plural…)
And big heatsinks
