I’ve already read about the resistors, but that should have a very negative effect on the linear path.

You should put resistors in series, to limit the voltage range, not in parallel. The PWM control expects 0−4 V, see here:

Simple 1v/oct oscillator issue

The square wave is generated by running the sawtooth through an internal voltage divider and comparing it to the control voltage, which gives you an effective range of just over 0 V to just under 4 V (supply/3).
