70's electric analog organ synth DIY thingy

another update here: in the end i scrapped the lm13700 vcf and built a transistor ladder one from eddy bergman (Eddy Bergman.com: Synthesizer Build part-7: THE MOOG LADDER FILTER.) and worked almost first try, apart from the fact that i get a constant crackling sound from time to time (i reckon the trimmer are the reason, the front pots are new), i also built 2 ad/ar that Sam designed, which is perfect for my case, since the release phase never happens when playing using the keyboard. I will post a demo of the sound later

In the end i bought the behringer vintage phaser, everything sounded amazing until i broke it ;-;
when i turn the tone on i get a crackling sound and no wawa, at least without tone it works, i think i gave it a signal too loud

in the last few weeks i also started working on the auto chord/arpeggio, i made an arduino code very similar to Sam’s Big Button to drive the arpeggio, everything works apart from two or three buttons and switches but nothing too hard,

i just realised that sam made a video about something very similar to what i’m dealing with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lds16PRwhtY
the only thing i’m missing is the chord arpeggio that he talks about at 9:10 and the thing he does at 7:39-7:44 (tho i’m not 100% sure about this one)

here is the original diagram if someone is mad enough to try and understand it (i almost did)

my bass/arpeggio/auto chord/whatever you want to call it is based on the AY-5-1317 IC (AY-5-1317A Datasheet PDF - Unspecified), I don’t know what the Godwin is based on.

and here’s the panel i made for it, reusing the original pcb with its switchboard

aaand i just realised that i can get the 4th and 6th bass output with some more tinkering, and actually saves me some struggle now that i think about it

when i’ll finish the arpeggio/bass i’ll start working on the drums

here are some sounds, in the first video you can hear the voice isolation i mentioned before:

and here’s the arpeggio/bass

Is your work place in the basement of a power plant?

i get that a lot , it’s an electronics workbench from the 80-90s that i got from my high school, they were about to throw it away
my work place is just my garage tho

Wow, great !
Please tell me the round glass on the left is some sort of radar which you use to keep an eye on those pesky UAVs.

unfortunately it’s just the magnifying glass included in my third hand, that i don’t use since for me it’s worse than naked eye

Is there anything useful (i.e. that you can actually use) in this board apart, say, from the overbench lights? In not, it could be an interesting project to repurpose some of the electronics behind the panel and replace the panel meters and sockets with things that could be more useful (e.g. an amplifier, speakers, load resistors, fused sockets, extraction fan, a simple signal generator, magnetic/pegboard for hand tooks, etc).

i actually use almost everything i have in the panels, there are two 1,5kVA isolation transformers paired with almost any kind of socket (us, uk, italian, european..), a 7kVA variac (limited at 4,4kVA by another isolation transformer, it’s the biggest one, bottom right in the last photo) with a transformer and rectifier to get an adjustable dc voltage up to 60v, a 24v transformers with 2 outlets, a countinuity tester with light and beep, another adjustable dc power supply up to 300v, i rarely use this one because it has ridicolus amount of voltage ripples, 4 8ohms and 4 47ohms high power resistors (last image bottom left tubes), a tree-phase outlet that I can’t use because i don’t have it in my house, and a stabilized 220v supply
and each “module” has a thermo-magnetic breaker with adequate current rating (it’d better replaced them all since they are 30+ y/o) and banana plugs
the first panel it’s the only I can’t use, and if i could, i’d rarely use it
i’ve already planned some mods in the electronic side, nothing too crazy tho

Impressive list of useful stuff!

And even this one can be useful for vaccum tube circuits.

So, any plans to turn this into a modular kosmo/euro/other music rack?

the workbench no, but i can add some circuit/components to test musical stuff, eg. i can get a dual 12v power supply from the 24v AC, in the future I wanted to build an oscilloscope first and a function generator

You should put a serge slope generator on each note :star_struck:

can you explain what it is and what it does? I’ve never heared of it before

Its a wonderful module from serge.

It would be a little unrealistic though

There is also the negative slew

It’s simpler but has a killer sound.
